Updated Standings
The day's most anticipated matchup, USA vs. Portugal, did not disappoint.
Portugal grabbed a fifth-minute lead after Geoff Cameron's woeful clearance fell to Nani, who slotted it past Tim Howard with ease.
The Yanks fought back and looked like the better team for much of the contest, though, and ultimately took the 2-1 lead on goals from Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey. The former was especially magical, per Bleacher Report UK:
A mere seconds away from leaving the hot and humid Manaus with six points and a spot in the round of 16, though, the Americans were done in by Cristiano Ronaldo, who had been mediocre for the first 95 minutes. Just before the final whistle, CR7 delivered a world-class cross that met the head of Silvestre Varela for the tie.
Still, while it was a heartbreaking finish for the United States, they have four points and have shown plenty of encouraging moments. ESPN's Ian Darke put it simply:
Howard, who was tremendous in goal, was also positive, via Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl:
In the day's opening match, the Belgians, just like in their opener against Algeria, erased an underwhelming start with a late game-winner. Against Algeria, it was Dries Mertens' 80th-minute strike. On Sunday against Russia, 19-year-old Divock Origi did the honors with this finish courtesy of Eden Hazard in the 88th minute:
As ESPN Stats & Info noted, it was a record-setting goal:
There are certainly positive takeaways. Belgium have qualified for the round of 16, Marc Wilmots has now twice pulled the right strings with his subs and Hazard has been talismanic in his World Cup debut.
Squawka Sports and CBS Sports' Jeff Borzello touched on the latter:
Still, the Red Devils will have to be better for a full 90 minutes if they hope to make a deep run in Brazil.
The day's second match turned into an offensive assault. Algeria, who before this tournament had scored one World Cup goal since 1986, poured in three goals in the first 40 minutes and rolled over South Korea, 4-2.
Of course, we all saw this coming, per ESPN Stats & Info:
Islam Slimani and Abdelmoumene Djabou each had a goal and an assist, and Algeria, who looked strong even in their loss to Belgium, were once again very impressive. A result against Russia on Thursday, and they'll be in tremendous shape to advance past the group stage for the first time in history.
Of course, even in the loss, 21-year-old Son Heung-min deserves credit. Bayer Leverkusen's young star completed a slew of dangerous runs, scored in the 50th minute and looked like the best individual player on the pitch for many spurts.
It has been a truly wild two weeks of the World Cup, but you better catch your breath while you can.
With countries preparing for the last group-stage matches, starting Monday there will be four fixtures—instead of three—per day for the next four days. After that is the knockout stages, where play becomes unbearably intense.
