Rob Van Dam: Truly One of a Kind

Matthew HesterJul 1, 2009

Hello, everyone. As always, thank you for taking the time to read my latest read.

I would like to talk about is someone I seldom mention these days. I am referring to Rob Van Dam.

Since the start of his pro wrestling career, RVD has always been known as a fighter.

He has amazed, dazzled, and put his body through hell for the sake of the business he loves. Over the last two years, though, he has had to fight a battle far worse than anything pro wrestling can offer.

In 2007, his wife Sonya was diagnosed with colon cancer. This is a disease that mainly strikes men in their late 40s and 50s. She would be the rare exception to get this at the age of 32.

This would hit RVD at a time when most would say he is in the prime of is career. Rob Van Dam would be forced to take a long period of time off to care to his wife. This was a sacrifice he gladly would make over if you ask him.

The last two years have been a struggle, as they would go from doctor to doctor trying to save his wife's life. Rob Van Dam would be there every step of the way, holding his wife's hand.

These struggling times would only to go on to make Sonya and Rob stronger. Their bond as husband and wife would become inseparable.

At first, things would not look good as more times than not, colon cancer patients don't make it. With a stroke of luck, though, they would catch a well-needed break. They would catch Sonya's cancer from spreading  just in time to maybe save her life.

Since they were able to confine the cancer, Sonya's chance of living would be raised to 50 percent. It would require a lot of life-risking surgery, though. They were still in for the fight of their lives.

Rob was a wreck as he watched his wife in pain, feeling helpless. He did the only thing he could though, he would stand by his wife's side.

The chemo would lead to sickness and pain as it often does; that would only be the beginning, though. Sonya would now require surgery to have half her colon removed in order to get rid of the tumor.

It would be a long, drawn-out surgery that would leave Rob Van Dam emotionally drained. She would have the tumor successfully removed from her colon.

After the surgery, they would embrace in a loving moment that will always be remembered by the two.

Sonya is now in remission, and only time will tell if the cancer will stay away. Just like before, though, Rob is by her side to be there for her. She would later go on to credit Rob for saving her life.

If not for his stubborn will to fight and hang on, she didn't know if she would be able to make it. She would go on to call Rob Van Dam the rock that she would hang on to in order to get through this tough time.

Whether we will ever see RVD in the ring again, only he can answer that question. If he doesn't, though, I will not think of him any less as a person and neither should any one else.

He is a strong, kind, loving family man who has gone through hell and back for the one he loves. I have more respect for that than any thing he can accomplish in the ring.

I can say with all honesty and sincerity that Rob Van Dam the man is truly "One of a kind".

Thank you for spending a few moments with me today.

As always, have a great day and god bless.
