Another Boneheaded Move By Bob Geren With Gio Gonzalez Costs A's

Steven ResnickJun 24, 2009

Bob Geren continues to make head-scratching decisions after another incident where  Gonzalez was in the game way too long.

Sure, if Gonzalez had made the play instead of throwing the ball away, the inning would have gone better for Gonzalez. However, he shouldn't have even been out there in the first place.

To say that Gonzalez was struggling is an understatement. Gonzalez wasn't fooling anybody except for Juan Uribe, which isn't saying much considering he swings at just about anything.

In the fourth inning, Gonzalez had already given up eight hits. It was only a matter of time before the Giants were going to take advantage of Gonzalez giving up multiple hits per inning.

The only good news for Gonzalez was that he didn't walk anyone until the top of the fourth inning. He walked two batters that inning, but he also struck out six batters so far in the game. However, it doesn't help when the Giants are making great contact on pitch-after-pitch.

This is where Geren should have done his job and realized that it's time to put Edgar Gonzalez in to take his place. If that had happened, the A's would have still been possibly trailing 3-1.

Instead, the A's had to go back trailing 6-1, all because Geren refuses to do his job properly. Geren is by far the worst manager in baseball and with decisions like this; one can't help but wonder why he still has a job.

No A's batter is hitting well lately. Adam Kennedy has slowed down from his fast start and is barely hitting over .300. Kurt Suzuki has come down to earth.

Matt Holliday started June out hot, but has cooled off. Jason Giambi is still not hitting, and Orlando Cabrera is finally starting to get it going after being dropped to the sixth spot.

As far as pitching, that's the only bright spot for the A's. However, when the bullpen is not used properly, which happens more times than it should, that's when the A's get burned for additional runs.

Since the A's seven-game winning streak, they have been playing terrible baseball, including being swept by the Giants in San Francisco. With tonight's game basically over after the top of the fourth inning, the A's will have lost five of six to the Giants.

That is not acceptable. It is time for Geren to be shown the door! Billy Beane really needs to take a look at his biggest failure in Geren and do it soon.

Eventually, the Angels or the Rangers are going to go on a hot streak again. The A's will not be fortunate enough to be able to stay within seven or less games in the standings.

Look at the Rockies after Clint Hurdle was fired they have won 18 out of 19 games. Although the A's probably wouldn't win like that, they'd start playing a lot better without Geren leading the team.

Let's face it; Geren makes Manny Act look like Joe Torre.
