Arsenal Fans Should Get over Their Cesc Fabregas Obsession

James McNicholasMay 9, 2014

The summer is not yet upon us, and the clamour among Arsenal fans for the return of Cesc Fabregas is already reaching fever pitch.

Gunners supporters' desperation to see him return is approaching obsessive levels. However, fans would be well advised to manage their expectations: A glorious comeback still feels far from likely.

The latest entry in the saga of Fabregas and Arsenal is a report in The Daily Star about Jack Wilshere conducting a Q&A on his personal Twitter account. Asked about the possibility of Fabregas coming back to Arsenal, he welcomed the former skipper's potential return:

The Gunners star hosted an impromptu Twitter Q&A session, letting fans ask him anything about his season with the north London club.

And after revealing he was busy watching Peppa Pig at home, Wilsere also admitted he would love to see Fabregas playing his football at the Emirates again.

After being asked 'Would you like to have Cesc back in the squad?' the England international replied: "Of course who wouldn't?"

Wilshere is not alone. Arsenal fans long for the return of their prodigal son. Fabregas came to Arsenal aged 15. Although he's a Barcelona boy, it was at Arsenal where he became a man.

However, much of the desire to buy him back seems to be born out of a fear of seeing Fabregas appear elsewhere in the Premier League.

Last summer, the Catalan midfielder was linked extensively by outlets like ESPN with a move to Manchester United. Although a deal never materialised, Arsenal fans were panic-stricken at the prospect of seeing a cherished son arrive at Old Trafford. After the defection of Robin van Persie, it would be too much to bear.

However, such terror often clouds debate over whether or not Cesc Fabregas is really what Arsenal need. Arsene Wenger only has a finite budget this summer. Would using a significant chunk of that money to bring Fabregas back really be a sensible use of resources?

Arsenal are well-stocked for creative midfielders, with Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey all important squad members. If anything, Arsenal need a destroyer, not another schemer.

Such an argument can always be countered by the adage that "you can never have too many good players." That’s true to an extent, but when a manager’s budget is limited, they must allocate resources wisely.

The biggest reason that Arsenal fans must curb their enthusiasm over Fabregas is that he doesn’t look likely to leave Barcelona any time soon. He fought hard to return to his boyhood club, leaving behind the captain’s armband at Arsenal to pursue a dream of becoming a legend at the Nou Camp. That is not a dream he will discard lightly.

Despite the criticism he has faced this season, Cesc's playing time is on the rise. With Xavi's powers waning, Fabregas is the obvious successor as the primary playmaker in the Barcelona midfield. This is the moment he has waited for.

Arsenal fans: Cool your jets. The wait for Fabregas' return is unlikely to end any time soon.
