UAE Derby 2014 Results: Winner, Payouts and Order of Finish
Toast of New York defied the 12-1 odds and came through to win the 2014 UAE Derby at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai on Saturday.
It was a thrilling run from start to finish, complete with a great ending that was fitting for such a prestigious event. Toast of New York’s strong surge at the end allowed him to win by 2-1/2 lengths over Asmar, who placed after a stout performance from wire-to-wire.
Emirates Flyer, a long shot at 20-1, held off odds-on favorite Giovanni Boldini to finish in third.

Recap
The UAE Derby favors horses that can get ahead early and that is exactly what Toast of New York did. The colt stalked behind Safety Check, who set the pace out of the gate and made his move at the beginning of the home stretch.
Toast of New York, a three-year-old, seemed to perform well on the Tapeta surface found at Meydan, and his pure speed made sure that he would not be caught from behind as he neared the finish line.
Despite what the odds implied, Jamie Spencer, Toast of New York’s jockey, wasn’t shocked at all by the victory, telling Harry Tregoning of Gulf News:
"I am not at all surprised [at winning], as this horse has been doing good things all along. He was in control and very responsive to me. This is a high-class horse and whatever he will do now will be impressive anyway.
"
Owner Michael Buckley was a tad more astonished that his horse won the majority share of the $2 million purse in the 1-3/16 mile Group 2 race, informing James Burns and Peter Scargill of RacingPost.com:
"I was nervous and shaky and it got worse as it went on. But when I saw him hit the front I thought he would be very hard to pass. He has got a very high cruising speed.
"

Toast of New York earned 100 points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying process and could very well make the trek from England to Churchill Downs come May.
Buckley was reluctant to commit to that just yet, according to Sky Sports: “The horse will now go back to Lambourn and Jamie will see how he is. The Kentucky Derby is not out of the question, but I can't say what the definite plan will be as I don't train him."
SkySports added the winning colt to their early odds list for the Run for the Roses, opening betting at 16/1 on this speedy horse.
It’ll be interesting to see if he makes the journey, but right now he has every reason to just enjoy the victory and see how training goes for the left-handed dirt track in Kentucky.
