Wayne Rooney Confused and Angry After Manchester United's Derby Humiliation

Jason PettigroveMar 26, 2014

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has criticised his team for not being good enough after another poor showing at Old Trafford, this time against local rivals Manchester City.

According to Jack Wilson of the Daily Star, Rooney was asked why the Red Devils had lost another match at home:

"

I don't know but it's not good enough.

We can't lose six homes games in a season and we have to put that right and make this a place teams fear again.

We know we have to respond. It's a bad night for us all but we have to move on. We didn't deserve to win. We weren't clinical enough and we didn't create enough chances.

No-one likes to lose a derby game - they're big games and they're great to win, but when you lose it's not a great feeling.

After the crushing defeat at home to title-chasing Liverpool, the local derby represented a perfect opportunity for United to give the home support something to shout about again.

But David Moyes' side never recovered from City's quick-fire start, with Edin Dzeko putting the visitors ahead after just 44 seconds.

It was the quickest goal United have ever conceded at Old Trafford in the Premier League, per Carl Markham of The Press Association (via the Daily Mail).

After that it was always going to be a long night, and Moyes admitted after the game—per Eurosport's Twitter account—that his club were well behind their local rivals in terms of where they want to be:

It was a sentiment that did not sit well with Sunday People sports editor Alex Shaw:

However, the manager did find an ally in Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, via Sky Sports:

No support will be of any comfort to Rooney, of course. The England man prides himself on giving 100 percent in every game and has continued to be one of the shining lights in a poor season for his side.

Tuesday's loss will ensure that United now finish the season with their lowest-ever Premier League points total, per Henry Winter of The Telegraph—another unwelcome footnote to a disastrous campaign.

With rumours of Rooney being handed the armband on a permanent basis, per Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail, Moyes will be hoping his talisman can provide the inspiration his team so obviously requires.
