Vincent Tan Reportedly Offered Illegal Bonuses to Cardiff City Players

Tim KeeneyMar 3, 2014

Once again, Vincent Tan is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Shortly before Sunday's contest against Tottenham, the Cardiff City manager, according to The Daily Mail's Neil Ashton, reportedly offered The Bluebirds a £3.7 million bonus if they are able to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Only one problem.

All potential bonuses must be logged before the start of the campaign, and Cardiff City is now facing an investigation from the league.

"We didn’t realise it was against regulations," a spokesman for the billionaire Malaysian told Ashton. "Vincent Tan has now rescinded the offer."

Oh, and as if Tan's ignorance of the rules wasn't already mind-boggling enough, he reportedly told the players they "need to shoot more" when offering the bonus.

It didn't really seem possible, but the 62-year-old has managed to drive his reputation even further into the ground with this one.

When he bought the team, the man who reportedly didn't know the rules of football changed Cardiff City's famous blue colors to red, replaced the bluebird on the crest with a red dragon and has even expressed the desire to change the team's name to the Cardiff Dragons.

Then, of course, there was this brilliant proposal:

USA Today's Nate Scott called Tan the worst owner in sports, and it's safe to say there are plenty of people out there who agree with him.

While the many critics have certainly made their voices heard, though, Tan isn't accepting his role as a villain.

"Overall, even now, I think, I would say even 90 percent of the fans are supportive," he said in an interview with BBC, via ESPN.com. "The problem is you have 10% or 5% or maybe even a few hundred people that are not supportive, a few hundred who are more vocal."

Either way, this newest development is just another example of Tan's complete bewilderment of how to run a football team.

Cardiff City, meanwhile, may be headed for the Championship—and they certainly won't get a bonus if they manage to climb out of the EPL's bottom three—but if it means more heat on Tan, they probably won't care.
