Top Contenders to Watch For

The United States of America features one of the most highly touted figure skaters in the men's free skate yet again, but Jeremy Abbott will have to shake off Thursday's struggles to post a big outing in Friday's event.
Abbott finished in 15th place in Thursday's short program event after falling hard on a failed move but finishing his routine, according to ESPN.com news services.
Per that report, Abbott looked to have injured his hip on the crash landing but was able to recover to finish his performance.
Despite his struggles and recent injury trouble in Sochi, the 28-year-old is one of the most feared participants in Friday's event, as the American star has won the U.S. Championships in four of the last six years.
However, it is hard to discount Hanyu as the favorite, as he took the short program on Thursday in spectacular fashion by breaking the 100-point barrier with a 101.45-point performance.
Chan, a three-time world champion, finished just barely four points back of Hanyu and looks to be a formidable contender for gold—or at least a podium spot.
Abbott isn't alone in his U.S. affiliation, as Jason Brown is also in the 24-man field, but the Americans have their work cut out for them. A handful of contenders means that the chances of USA reaching the podium are dwindling.
