Bray Wyatt Does Not Need a Title to Succeed in WWE

Tom ClarkFeb 12, 2014

Bray Wyatt is WWE's resident eccentric madman. He is an enigma, a character wrapped in riddles and shrouded in mystery. His words captivate WWE fans even as his actions surprise and bewilder those around him.

For many, Bray represents the best and brightest that the company's next generation of Superstars has to offer.

But unlike many of those Superstars, including Roman Reigns and Big E Langston, there seems to be very little talk of Bray achieving great things with a championship around his waist. The reason for that is quite simply because he does not need a title to succeed in WWE.

The debate over whether the man or the championship is more important is as old as the chicken versus the egg. For some WWE fans, there is very little reason to care about a guy unless he actually wins some gold and perhaps even builds his career around it.

A great example of this was "Mr. Perfect," Curt Hennig. He is widely considered to be one of the best ring technicians that the business has ever seen, a man that consistently turned in one great performance after another during his career.

Mr. Perfect

However, it's his two reigns as Intercontinental champion that many fans feel defined his run in WWE. He held the belt for a total of 406 days and faced the best that the promotion had to offer. From Bret Hart to Roddy Piper, Mr. Perfect took on every opponent put in front of him and his matches did not disappoint.

Hennig was one of the finest pure athletes in the industry and his ring work was second to none.

With that said, it was the swagger and spotlight brought by being the Intercontinental champion that a great number of WWE fans feel put him on the map.

On the flip side of that debate is one of WWE's current titleholders, Dean Ambrose. As United States champion, Dean has had a grand total of 12 televised title defenses since he won the belt from Kofi Kingston back in May of 2013. That amounts to putting the championship on the line on television 1.34 times per month.

Dean Ambrose

In fact, nearly four months had passed between his last title defense in October of 2013 to his most recent on the February 10 edition of Raw.

However, none of this is a statement on Dean as a performer in the ring. His name is consistently mentioned among the current crop of WWE Superstars that seem destined for greatness. Perhaps all he needs is more time and the right opportunities before he claims a prime spot in Vince McMahon's company.

Nevertheless, his time as U.S. champion has been very forgettable to say the least.

In one case, championship gold was used by the talent to showcase his abilities in main event scenarios. In the other case, championship gold was seen as a default trophy put around a talent's waist for apparently no good reason at all. In both instances, proper booking made all the difference in the world.

Of all the Superstars that have entered WWE in the past two years, though, Bray Wyatt is one of the few that just does not need the needless baggage that a title belt can potentially become. He also does not need his career elevated by the prestige that only a properly booked championship can bring.

For Wyatt, all he needs is his character.

It is his most redeeming quality, his primary drawing point. While Bray's work in the ring is very competent and he is deceptively quick for a big man, the truth is that he perhaps is not viewed in the same light as the aforementioned Ambrose.

Basically, Bray's ability in the ring is more than enough to keep fans invested in his matches, but it is his character that attracted them in the first place.

Bray is the modern day Jake "The Snake" Roberts, a guy that does his best work on the mic. He sells matches, creates rivalries and verbally dissects opponents from top to bottom. He is the most interesting character in WWE, and every time he speaks, fans never know what to expect.

But they're listening, and that is what matters.

The fact is that Wyatt could potentially go his entire WWE career without ever having touched a championship belt. His character is enough of a draw for so many fans that just cannot wait to see what he will do and say next.

Anticipating Bray's spot on the card has nothing to do with a career-defining title win, but rather the intensity he brings to his matches and the dark, poetic vibe of his words.

Both Roddy Piper and Jake Roberts are widely remembered not for championships they held, but for the characters they portrayed. They are loved by fans all over the world because the most important quality they shared was the ability to entertain every time they were on camera. They are considered two of the most memorable Superstars in WWE history.

Bray Wyatt's name could eventually be added to that discussion, and he will not need a championship belt to put him there.
