A Few Early College Football Possible Upsets Worth a Look
While I'll be picking games against the spread with plenty of money line underdogs as is the case every season at The Sports Chat Place, I see a few games on the schedule where potential upsets could be brewing.
While I'm not going to venture a guess as to where the lines will be in any of these games when they role around, it's pretty easy to see who will be the decided underdog.
The points often make these games gift wrapped as bettors seem infatuated with favorites, but these up and comers may not even need points as they have a shot to win outright.
1. Arkansas State at Nebraska (Sept. 12)
Arkansas State played a pretty rough schedule last season and they play another this year. Nebraska hasn't proved anything on the field, especially out of conference in years.
This one looks like a classic trap with the Huskers hitting the road the following week to play Virginia Tech who, as we correctly predicted last year, beat Nebraska outright. If the Huskers stick to their recent patterns, the Wolfpack with the points could be an overlay.
2. Memphis Vs. Ole Miss (Sept. 6)
Mississippi has had plenty of press-clippings and predictions to read about themselves this offseason, and expectations are high despite losing some first-round NFL talent. Could Houston Nutt have brought the Rebels such depth after just one season?
My guess is Mississippi isn't going to be as good as billed, and with Tommy West, Memphis is never horrible. The Tigers offense should be pretty good—good enough to keep this close and at home they just might steal it.
With the points, this one may be too easy.
3. Iowa State Vs. Iowa (Sept. 12)
Even the most hardcore Hawkeye fans will tell you Iowa State has been a real thorn in the side—this season they aren't going away.
The visitor has lost five in a row in this series and the Cyclones would like nothing more than making it six. Last year's game was a doozy.
4. Washington at Notre Dame (Oct. 3)
This game is a little deep in the season to be predicting the upset since we'll have a ton of new information by kickoff, but we'll go for it. The Huskies are going to be a lot better than they were last year, and while that isn't saying much, I think the Huskies will be much better.
Jake Locker is a difference maker and Washington fans travel well traditionally. My guess is the Husky faithful won't miss out on an excuse to visit South Bend on a nice fall weekend and the Irish have been beatable for quite some time no matter where the game has been played.
