Kevin De Bruyne to Manchester City: Latest Transfer Details, Reaction and More

Tim DanielsAug 30, 2015

Kevin De Bruyne's stint with Wolfsburg has come to an end as Manchester City reached an agreement with the Wolves on Sunday for the attacking midfielder, who arrives on a six-year deal.

Manchester City confirmed the deal via a release on the club's website while also sharing his new squad number:

"I want to reach the highest level possible as a player and I think the most important thing is that at the end of the season we can be happy and maybe have some titles," De Bruyne said in the release. "I think this is the most important for the Club, the players and for the fans of course."

It's the second move in as many years for the talented Belgium international. He left Chelsea in 2014 after an unsuccessful stay with the Premier League club that saw him make just nine appearances across all competitions with no goals and one assist, per Transfermarkt.com.

De Bruyne arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2012 with high expectations after emerging as a very promising playmaker during his time with Genk. Things never fell into place for him as originally expected, however, leading to a loan stay with Werder Bremen in 2012-13.

Once again, he enjoyed success away from Chelsea, tallying 10 goals and 10 assists in 34 matches for the German side.

The successful loan stint didn't change his status with the Blues, though. He returned to a crammed Blues squad, and it became clear during the first half of the campaign that his path to consistent playing time had plenty of hurdles.

It was also evident his best chance of getting on the pitch regularly to continue his development would be with another club.

After the exit from Chelsea in 2014, Matt Barlow and Adam Shergold of the Daily Mail passed along comments the winger made to Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws about not seeing eye to eye with manager Jose Mourinho.

"I've also never asked Mourinho. He has never told me: 'Kevin, you don't train well,'" De Bruyne said. "It's a pity he told a press conference that I wasn't doing well on the training pitch. That's not me. I'm always a player who gives the full 100 percent in training. Those remarks created a wrong image."

De Bruyne moved to Wolfsburg in January. He enjoyed moderate success with the side, scoring three goals and assisting on six more in 16 Bundesliga matches. His presence certainly provided a boost to the attack.

After representing Belgium at the 2014 World Cup, he then returned to the Wolves. By the end of the 2014-15 campaign he'd scored 10 goals and tallied 20 assists in Germany's top flight, some of the best numbers in Europe.

De Bruyne is a terrific attacking talent. He's shown the ability to become an elite playmaking midfielder with great vision, creativity and passing skills that should continue to develop as he gains more experience against top clubs.

It's going to take some time, though. Perhaps the latest move will allow him to enjoy a longer stay and the chance to find some much-needed consistency in England.

De Bruyne will also need to improve his defensive impact if he's going to become a more complete midfielder. His attacking contributions are more than enough to warrant attention for now, though.

Having excelled in his spell at Wolfsburg, he can now enjoy working alongside the likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Yaya Toure at Manchester City.
