2014 BDO World Darts Championship: Daily Scores, Results, Schedule and More

Tom SunderlandJan 4, 2014

The BDO World Darts Championship brings some of the sport's biggest names together at the Lakeside County Club in Surrey, with both men and women fighting for 2014 glory.

The Surrey location will play host to more than 50 darts sensations—40 men and 16 womenwhich will make it the biggest tournament of this kind that's ever been on display.

Over the next week, the field will be whittled down to just two champions. The male victor will claim a £300,000 prize pot, while women's titleholder Anastasia Dobromyslova will seek to retain her 2013 title and rake in the £29,000 prize fund that awaits.

However, the BDO giants will once again come to the fore, all in search of the same goal: to come out on top of the pile.

Men's Final

Stephen Bunting 7-4 Alan Norris

Recap

It was Stephen Bunting's time to shine and he did with a masterful performance against Alan Norris in the men's final.

"The Bullet" finished strong to down Alan "Chuck" Norris in the final by winning four out of the last five and won as the top seed entering the tournament, as BBC officially reports following the match:

"

Stephen Bunting beats Alan Norris 7-4 to win the 2014 BDO World Darts Championship http://t.co/jNvFrcsh8g

— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) January 12, 2014"

The event held at the Lakeside was tied up 3-3 at the beginning as Bunting got off to a somewhat shaky start. The young star was facing a 41-year-old Norris who came in as the No. 9 player in the BDO and was also playing in his first World Championship.

Bunting, who came in as the top seed in the tournament, was noticeably nervous at the start, as Andy McLaren of The Evening Express In Aberdeen points out on Twitter:

"

Stephen Bunting looks very nervous in this BDO Darts World Final. His darts are all over the place. Fingers crossed he sorts that out!

— Andy McLaren (@AndyMcLaren_) January 12, 2014"

But following the 3-3 tie, Bunting took over. The 28-year-old from St. Helens won the next three points to take a 6-3 lead before Norris made a last-ditch effort with a 140 checkout.

After Norris' win in the 10th set, Bunting calmed his nerves and pulled out the 11th and ultimately final set of the BDO World Darts Championship. The Live Darts official Twitter account captured an emotional shot of the world champion following the event:

"

This is what becoming World Champion means to Stephen Bunting... pic.twitter.com/733wmKyXhA

— Live Darts (@livedarts) January 12, 2014"

Bunting's string of dominating performances made for a tournament to remember, but Norris' effort was also notable. Prior to the final, Bunting had only lost four sets in the first four rounds. After winning the first four rounds by a total of 18-4, Bunting had to work against Norris to pull out the 7-4 win.

The emotional Bunting was well deserving of the ovation he received following the final after gritting out a huge win over Norris.

Recap

With the men's tournament coming to a close on Sunday, Saturday's action saw the first piece of 2014 BDO World Darts Championship silverware handed out in the ladies competition.

Lisa Ashton and Deta Hedman each ensured that it was an all-English final on display at the Lakeside Country Club, knocking out Russian Anastasia Dobromyslova and Dane Ann-Louise Peters in their respective semi-finals early on.

In the only other afternoon action, Stephen Bunting maintained his dominance as the overall top seed in the men's tournament, losing just his fourth set of the tournament thus far.

"The Bullet" shot to a 6-1 victory over Robbie "Kong" Green, whose highest-seeded opponent prior to this matchup was 13th-overall Gary Robson.

Attention was quickly diverted to the women's final, however, as Hedman and Ashton once again took to the oche in a bid to establish this year's victor, and it was Bolton-born Ashton who prevailed.

With play switching to a best-of-five format for the final, "The Lancashire Rose" quickly found herself in trouble against Hedman, dropping the first two sets and teetering on the brink of collapse.

However, Ashton regathered and struck back with a sensational comeback, hitting a maximum in the third set to kickstart her revival.

The 43-year-old would drop just one more leg in total as she strode to the biggest title of her career to date, winning 3-2 in the end.

Following that upset, another would follow shortly after as Alan Norris, an unseeded contender for the men's title, beat Jan Dekker by the tightest of margins, squeezing through to the final on the back of a 6-5 win.

With 11 sets played, "Chuck" averaged more than 10 plus-ton scores per set, throwing 114 scores of 100 or more in total, compared to Dekker total of just 84.

That included 14 maximums on Norris' part, and the 41-year-old from Yeovil came back from being 4-2 down at one point to eventually overtake his Dutch foe and book a place opposite Bunting in tomorrow's climax.

Evening Session

Men's Quarterfinals (best of seven sets)

Jan Dekker 4-2 Martin Adams

Alan Norris 5-2 James Wilson

Women's Quarterfinals (best of three sets)

Tamara Schuur 0-2 Lisa Ashton

Fallon Sherrock 1-2 Anastasia Dobromyslova

Recap

Jan Dekker reached the BDO World Darts Championship semifinals after beating three-time champion Martin Adams 5-2.

Dekker raced out of the blocks to take a 3-0 lead before Adams staged a mini-revival to bring the score back to 3-2.

Despite falling two legs behind in the sixth set, Dekker kept his nerve and edged 4-2 ahead before winning the seventh set to reach his second semifinal at the expense of crowd favourite Adams.

Alan Norris will join Dekker in the semifinal after seeing off James Wilson 5-2 in Friday's other last eight tie.

In a fiercely contested match there was little between the players as they frantically matched one another dart for dart.

But after going in 2-2 at the break, Norris returned with the edge and moved into an unassailable lead to reach his first semifinal and deny Wilson his.

Meanwhile, in the women's quarterfinals Lisa Ashton booked her place in the last four with a straight sets victory against Tamara Schuur.

Ashton, who saw off another Dutch counterpart, Aileen de Graaf, 2-1 in the first round the previous day, withheld pressure from Schuur in the first set to win 3-2 before easing to a 3-0 victory in the second leg.

In the day's other women's quarterfinal, current champion Anastasia Dobromyslova edged out debutant Fallon Sherrock 2-1.

Sherrock took the first set but Dobromyslova held her nerve to fight back and claim an 11th straight victory, despite her opponent having four successive match darts.

Recap

Jan Dekker and Martin Adams both secured their place in the last-16 of the BDO World Darts Championship during the sixth day of action at Lakeside.

Three-time BDO world champion Adams eased past Scottish hopeful Ross Montgomery with relative ease in the final tie of the second round.

“Wolfie” raced into a two-set lead, before allowing Montgomery to bring the tie back to 2-1. From there though Adams went up a gear and rounded off an impressive display with a 4-1 scoreline.

Earlier in the afternoon session, Dutchman Jan Dekker had seen off Geert de Vos of Belgium in a closely contested affair, and not without an early scare, when he lost the first set.

However, Dekker fought back to level the tie and completed his recovery to go in front 2-1, only to allow De Vos back to 2-2.

From there, though, he was the consumnate professional and finished off the job in style, to complete a 4-2 win.

Meanwhile, in the final first round women's game Lisa Ashton edged out Aileen de Graaf to win 2-1 in what was instantly dubbed a classic encounter.

De Graaf, making her first appearance at Lakeside, immediately laid down a marker by opening with 180 before going on to win the first set.

But the vastly experienced Ashton showed resolve to fight back against her Dutch opponent and win the tie via sudden death.

In the evening session, Stephen Bunting and Robbie Green both prevailed in men's quarterfinal action, advancing to the semifinals thanks to identical 5-2 victories. However, Bunting's win was the most dramatic of the session as he erased a two-set deficit to win.

Women's quarterfinal action saw Ann Louise Peters and Deta Hedman advance 2-0 past Julie Gore and Irina Armstrong, respectively.

Recap

Robbie Green, Stephen Bunting and Tony Eccles performed excellently to secure their progress through the BDO World Darts Championship during the fifth day of action.

Green continues to impress in front of the Lakeside crowd and showed no signs of complacency as he romped to victory over Gary Robson. "Kong" captured the opening set with a memorable 12-dart leg which concluded with a stunning bullseye finish after eating up 167 at the checkout.

Although Robson managed to secure himself the equalising set, Green waltzed toward the lead with three consecutive legs to make it 2-1. From here, there was little sign of the result ever changing.

Green rounded off a fine display by hitting 120 at the finish, granting himself a place in the quarterfinal against Tony Eccles, who fought brilliantly to beat Wesley Harms 4-3.

Eccles was behind for much of the match and managed to stay within touching distance until the deciding set. Harms, who appeared disheartened after dropping his lead, showed little fight as Eccles masterfully launched himself into the mouthwatering clash with Green.

Stephen Bunting also advanced after a simple win over Dave Prins.

As noted by ESPN, "The Bullet" eased toward victory with a double success rate of 75 percent after two sets. Resistance was non-existent from Prins, who was unable to claim a set against the man from Liverpool.

During the evening session, the women took one step closer to completing the first round, as Sharon Prins ran into the buzzsaw that was Irina Armstrong. En route to a quick 2-0 victory, Ice Baby nailed two 180's and hit an otherwordly 75 percent of her checkouts.

Ladies Darts Org on Twitter summed up the transcendent performance:

"

WELL WHAT CAN YOU SAY. IRINA'S GAME WAS JUST AMAZING WITH A 75% CHECKOUT. THAT WAS HOW TO PLAY, UNLUCKY SHARON... http://t.co/Z0KEuq4yhk

— Ladies Darts Org (@LadiesDartsOrg) January 8, 2014"

Armstrong will take on No. 1 seed Deta Hedman in what should be a scintillating matchup.

On the men's side, Martin Atkins was forced to concede due to an elbow injury, sending Rick Hofstra through to the quarters for a showdown with Stephen Bunting.

Finishing off the day, Alan Norris and James Wilson also booked quarterfinal appearances.

Norris split the first two sets with countryman Glen Durrant but turned up the aggression and won the next three to advance. BDO Darts' Twitter gave a glimpse at the stats:

"

Glen Durrant v Alan Norris Averages: Durrant 3 Dart Average 92.42 C/O% 38.89% Norris 3 Dart Average 94.15 C/O% 50%

— BDO Darts (@BDOdarts) January 8, 2014"

During the day's finale, Wilson got off to a two-set advantage in his match against Scott Mitchell and looked like he was going to roll to an easy victory, but Scotty Dog made won the next two sets to make things interesting. Jammie Dodger kept his composure, though, winning the final two sets to come away with the 4-2 victory.

BDO Darts once again supplied a look at the stats. Note the similar checkout percentages from each player:

"

Scott Mitchell v James Wilson Mitchell Averages: 3 Dart Average 88.78 C/O% 37.04% Wilson 3 Dart Average 92.26 C/O % 37.5%

— BDO Darts (@BDOdarts) January 8, 2014"

Norris and Wilson will now battle each other in the quarters.

Recap

With the first round of this year's BDO World Darts Championships coming to an end, Martin Adams, Scott Mitchell and Stephen Bunting each booked their places in the final 16 on Tuesday.

The day began with arguably the pick of the competition's opening phase, as world No. 3 Tony O'Shea took on three-time world champion Martin Adams in an extremely hyped matchup.

However, the pair didn't run as tightly as many would have foretold, with Adams trouncing his opposition 3-0.

The 57-year-old showed that there may yet be even more titles to be added to his collection as he won nine straight sets to end a dismal performance from third seed O'Shea.

Matters quickly turned for the tenser, however, as Mitchell's 3-2 victory over Paul Hogan came as a result of a five-set thriller which ended with an eight-led decider in its final moments.

Both players could walk away from the encounter with heads held high, the defeated Hogan managing to hit an incredible 40 tons compared to Mitchell's tally of 32.

American Jim Widmayer was forced to bow out of the competition, too, his journey ending at the hands of top seed Stephen Bunting.

"The Bullet" powered into a 2-0 lead before letting his foot of the gas and allowing Widmayer a single set, but the mistake was corrected thanks to a rousing fourth set from the tournament favourite, only one of his three-dart throws routing in a total of less than 96.

Deta Hedman followed compatriot Tamara Schuur into the quarter-finals with an evening victory over Lorraine Farlam, losing just one leg against here English opponent to claim a straight sets win.

The world No. 1 showed exactly why she's referred to as "The Dark Detroyer" with a ruthless opening performance and making good on any claims the favourite might have of bettering her runners-up finish at the World Championships in 2012.

Afterwards, it came the turn of Dave Prins to give as dominant a display against Jim Williams, also dropping just one set on his way to a 3-0 triumph over his Welsh opponent.

Having won the first set in just 18 darts, the unseeded underdog was highly impressive and took three maximums on his way to a last 16 faceoff against tournament favourite Stephen Bunting.

And Glen Durrant could also have a difficult time in the next round after booking a spot opposite fellow Englishman Alan Norris in the last 16, Norris having already thumped defending champions Scott Waites out of the running.

Durrant's Tuesday evening triumph over Mike Day was slightly fortunate despite the fact that the scoreline read 3-0 come the end, with all three sets being decided by scores of 3-2.

However, given that "Duzza" maintained an average of 28.72 compared to his New Zealand opponent's 25.29, the result looks slightly more deserved the deeper one delves.

Last on the schedule were James Wilson and Christian Kist, the only pair to see out a contest that finished with both parties taking at least one set apiece.

On this occasion, it was "Jammie Dodger" Wilson who edged his way out of the situation, preventing Kist from becoming the third Holland native to join the last 16.

World No. 42 Kist took a surprise lead against second seed Wilson, but that surprise was enough to stir the competition's second seed into action, with three sets of swift retribution following shortly afterwards.

Evening Session Results

Julie Gore 2-0 Rachna David

Jeroen Geerdink 0-3 Dave Prins

Geert De Vos 3-1 Madars Razma

Ross Montgomery 3-2 Michael Meaney

Recap

Monday's play began with a tense affair between Darryl Fitton and Tony Eccles, who shared an argument at last year's competition, per the Hartlepool Mail.

Eccles' ability to capture the third set against the throw on a double seven put the 43-year-old 2-1 up, providing a lead that would never be overturned.

"The Viper" saw his opening set lead cut down by his opponent, who levelled proceedings with a double 16, but Fitton was unable to make a lasting impact when he missed three doubles at the tail end of the encounter.

Eccles smoothly confirmed the win with a double from his third dart and will face Wesley Harms in the next round.

Paul Hogan enjoyed a similar success during his preliminary round win over Karel Sedlacek and will be pleased to progress through the competition with a win.

Jan Dekker also settled down after a slow opening to ease his way beyond Benito Van De Pas in the afternoon session's third tie. The 23-year-old Dutchman appeared less nervous than his 20-year-old opponent in a fixture that pitted two of the sport's finest youngsters together.

Dekker will be tested more thoroughly in the next round and can expect to gain a few fans if he continues to exert an air of confidence during play.

The evening's proceedings kicked off with Julie Gore winning the only women's match of the day, booking her place in the quarter-finals thanks to a 2-0 win over unseeded Rachna David.

It was a fairly rudimentary outing for the Welsh powerhouse as far as the score card was concerned, but Norwegian David put up a fight in winning three of the nine legs that were played.

Dave Prins resumed the men's action with a 3-0 drubbing of Jeroen Geerdink in what was the final preliminary meeting of the tournament, helping to complete the competition's full draw.

Despite the vast gulf in between the two players as far as a result goes, Dutchman Geerdink was impressive for parts, but ultimately looked slightly out of his depth, failing to even even one 180 while Prins walked away with three.

And while one preliminary victor had a smile on his face, it was another belated qualifier, Madars Razma, who didn't have quite as much to be overjoyed about as he exited the tournament, losing 3-1 to Belgian Geert de Vos.

"Foxy" was in silky smooth action throughout, boasting a three-dart average of 28.61 and throwing three 180s in the final six legs to drive the result home.

The win sets up a last 16 fixture against Jan Dekker, whom De Vos lost to at the World Master back in October.

Monday's final matchup proved to be one of its finest, and 14th seed Ross Montgomery will have been relieved to have triumph over Michael Meaney, who ran the Scot awfully close to the wire.

While the Irish contenders may have taken a result of the 180 throws, "The Boss" proved more consistent in the fixture and grabbed a more consistent portion of the ton-plus scores.

Meaney took an early lead in sets before being pegged back 2-1, and after losing the fourth set, it was a back-and-forth decider that gave Montgomery his berth in the last 16, ending on double 10.

Fallon Sherrock 2-0 Rilana Erades

Recap

Sunday couldn't have gotten off to a tenser beginning than the back-and-forth encounter between Hiroaki Shimizu and Christian Kist.

The 2011 Japan Open winner Shimizu traded early blows with Dutchman Kist, taking the first set and eventually going on to lead 2-1 after three sets.

However, the turning point in this matchup came when "The Lipstick" broke throw for the first time in the match, stealing the fourth set 3-0 in legs before going on to clinch the vital decider and win the opening preliminary fixture.

However, the rest of the afternoon's meetings were all very much considered with the tournament itself, with Anastasia Dobromyslova, Robbie Green and Gary Robson each coming out on top of their opening matchups.

Defending women's champion Dobromyslova saw off the challenge of the unseeded Karin Krappen, triumphing 2-1 over her opponent after slipping to a shock 1-0 defeat after the first set.

Green's 3-0 thumping of Richie George was a far more rudimentary affair, with "Kong" thumping his chest as he barrelled past Richie George, maintaining a respectable three-dart average of 94.29.

Robson's win over Ron Meulenkamp wasn't quite as straightforward, and after jostling with his Dutch foe for five sets, it was the Cramlington native who emerged victorious.

New Zealander Mike Day wasn't as likely to let a home crowd affect his throw, however, and Englishman Sam Head succumbed to the pressure in just three sets to bow out of the tournament at the preliminary stage.

Day's advantage in pedigree was evident as the 2013 Canterbury Open champion cruised past head in what was the first time that the pair have come into contact on the circuit.

A far tighter matchup followed shortly afterwards, with Jim Widmayer flying the flag as the only United States contender, edging Garry Thompson 3-2 in the end.

"The Recliner" fell to the world No. 166, despite coming into the competition as world No. 23 and boasting a home support at his back.

Recap

Saturday's action began in blistering fashion as Tamara Schuur axed nine-time BDO Women's World Professional Darts Champion Trina Gulliver from the competition. The Dutch contender took a straight-sets victory, allowing her English opponent just one leg in total and cruising into a quarter-final place as a result.

And the shocks didn't stop there, as men's defending champion Scott Waites was also handed an early dismissal at the hands of Alan Norris. Norris was in control throughout this all-English affair, claiming a majority of the tons and adding three 180 scores to Waites' two. He saw out a 3-0 shock victory in style.

The first match of the day that didn't end with one party accounting for all the legs was Martin Adams' 3-1 win over David Cameron in the preliminary feuds.

The Canadian hopeful slumped to a 2-0 deficit in sets and hoped to pull off what would have been a momentous comeback after rescuing the third set, but it wasn't to be. "Wolfie" surged in with three plus-100 scores to ram home the final leg.

No. 12 seed Wesley Harms rounded off the afternoon's action with a 3-0 routing of Paul Jennings. Per Darts Database, this was the fourth time that the pair had met, and it was the Dutchman Harms who tied their record at 2-2 thanks to a powerful opening display that saw him hit an incredible 33 plus-100 finishes.

In the evening, things got a little tighter. Madars Razma came out on top of the first match of the tournament to be decided by just a single leg, beating John Michael 3-2 to book a place in the first round opposite Gert de Vos.

Razma threw just one more ton-plus finish than his opponent and recovered magnificently after surrendering the first set to eventually take a 2-1 lead. However, it still went down to the wire between the pair. After losing the fourth set, Razma rallied to collect a vital third set, despite notching fewer maximums throughout the encounter.

Irishman Michael Meaney was next to seal his place in the tournament's official listings, wining his preliminary matchup against Harley Kemp to set up a first-round encounter with Scott Montgomery.

In what was the worst quality match of the opening day, both players struggled in their duties to muster respectable three-dart averages. Meaney fared the better of the two with 80.25 as his number. The outsider strolled to a 3-0 victory nonetheless, leaving his Australian counterpart with little in terms of consolation and besting Kemp in every statistical facet that mattered.

And the day ended as it began, with Martin Atkins and Ann Louise Peters grabbing unanswered wins over Jeffrey de Graaf and Rachel Brooks, respectively.

Though it was a shock for No. 8 seed De Graaf to bow out so early, the Dutchman was poor in his build-up, scoring over 100 on just 19 occasions compared to Atkins' 34—almost double that of his own high finishes.

Brooks' exit was also a surprise for those in attendance. Peters overcame the pressure of an away crowd to take a straight-sets 2-0 win over the tournament's No. 5 seed; she will face either Julie Gore or Rachna David in her quarter-final.
