Roderick Johnson to Florida State: Seminoles Land 4-Star OT Prospect
Florida State has picked up another big part of the 2014 recruiting class with a commitment from 4-star offensive lineman Roderick Johnson.
Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports first broke the news of the player's decision:
"Florissant (Mo.) Hazelwood Central four-star offensive tackle Roderick Johnson had been considered a Florida State lean for most of the recruiting process, and he made it official on National Signing Day on Wednesday, announcing for the Seminoles.
"
The first thing you notice about Johnson is his massive size. He is listed at 6'6" and 315 pounds, a number that will only increase once he gets into a college weight-training program.
With his strength, the Missouri native has the ability to be a mauling tackle in the run game who clears plenty of room for the ball-carriers behind him.
This skill is a big reason 247Sports' composite rankings have him as the No. 14 offensive tackle and the No. 125 overall prospect in the 2014 class. He's also ranked as the second-best player out of Missouri.
Additionally, he has the chance to develop into an even better prospect if he is willing to put the time in to polish his technique. He is still relatively raw and needs to work on being a better pass-blocker. 247Sports highlights his footwork as a key area for improvement in that aspect.
As a result, it would not be surprising to see Johnson spend some time on the bench in a redshirt year before contributing for the Seminoles. However, they clearly see potential in the big man as someone who can be a big-time player in a few years.
With the size and strength that scouts love, it would not even be surprising to see him make his way to the NFL in a few years.
Before this happens, though, he remains on track to be a quality player at the next level. ESPN Recruiting Nation Football (subscription required) has this to say about the talented prospect:
"A big dude with some good ability. Shows promising flashes and if he can be more consistent in technique in areas and develop and improve in some others, he has the size and tools to be a very good college OT.
"
With an already solid recruiting class in place, Florida State has set itself up for plenty of success in the future.
