Pistons Outlast LeBron, Heat in 107-97 Win

Matthew SchmidtDec 3, 2013

The Miami Heat's 10-game winning streak is over.

Eight Detroit Pistons players scored in double figures as the Pistons held off a furious Heat rally in the fourth quarter for a 107-97 win at AmericanAirlines Arena on Tuesday night, handing Miami its second home loss of the season.

Kyle Singler led Detroit with 18 points and hit a career-high four threes. Andre Drummond had a double-double, going for 10 points and 18 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action due to foul trouble.

With Dwyane Wade sitting this one out as a result of knee soreness, Michael Beasley stepped up in his absence, tying LeBron James for a game-high 23 points.

The Pistons shot 51 percent from the floor in this one and won in spite of turning the ball over 22 times. The Heat had 19 turnovers of their own and shot only 44 percent overall.

Let's analyze the keys to this game.

Defensive Breakdowns by Miami

Outside of a short stretch in the fourth quarter, the Heat's defense looked absolutely awful on Tuesday night.

They did a terrible job of rotating, leaving the hot Singler open numerous times from beyond the arc. They also allowed the Pistons to rack up 60 points in the paint thanks to terrible help defense and leaving open lanes for Detroit players to cut into the paint off the ball.

Miami looked sluggish for most of the full 48 minutes in this one, hardly showing any interest in sufficiently defending the Pistons.

The Heat did have a feverish stretch of great D midway through the fourth as they mounted a 20-6 run, but they then sagged off after a big Brandon Jennings triple with just over four minutes to go.

Great Ball Movement by Detroit

Save for that disastrous stint in in the middle of the final quarter where the Pistons were taking awful shots late in the clock and turning the ball over, Detroit's ball movement was very solid in this one.

The Pistons did an outstanding job of showing patience offensively, rotating the ball around and waiting until someone either broke free underneath the basket or until they found a shot they liked on the perimeter.

Even though Detroit is a terrible three-point shooting team, it managed to shoot 7-of-16 from long range in the win, a direct result of getting open looks thanks to crisp, clean, fast passes.

The Pistons also did a phenomenal job of making the right plays in transition.

Big Plays by Brandon Jennings Down the Stretch

Jennings, who turned the ball over seven times, was hardly masterful on Tuesday night. However, he was fantastic over the final four minutes, draining a shot-clock beating triple from about 30 feet away and later stripping LeBron in transition which led to a Pistons bucket on the other end.

Jennings also did a fine job of getting Detroit under control after nailing the big three. Perhaps the trey gave him some confidence and a second wind for the rest of the way.

Keep in mind that the Pistons were without Chauncey Billups an Will Bynum, so Jennings had to play 44 minutes. Taking that into account, it's impressive that he was able to finish this game so effectively.

LeBron Never Took Over

I'm not sure if he was disinterested, gassed or a combination of both, but James never really left his typical fingerprints on this game.

Yes, he posted 23 points, six assists and five boards, but he never went on one of his patented runs where he destroys everything in his path.

Credit the Pistons for defending him well, but at the same time, LeBron just looked "off" in this one, particularly in the fourth quarter when it seemed as if the Heat had Detroit on the ropes.
