Why Cheick Tiote Was Newcastle's Most Important Player vs. Liverpool

Dan SheridanOct 19, 2013

Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard may have been handed the official man of the match award after his side’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United, but in the eyes of many, Cheick Tiote was the best player on the pitch.

The Magpies midfielder put in an exceptional shift in the middle of the park and handed his manager and the fans a convenient reminder of his qualities.

While all eyes were on the Reds’ attacking duo of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, Tiote continually took the sting out of the visitors’ play and worked tirelessly.

And as the Toon manfully hung on for a point having been reduced to 10 men after just 40 minutes, the Ivorian international's all-action display couldn’t have been better timed.

Just as it did when he first arrived at St. James’ Park over three years ago, his no-nonsense approach had the crowd on their feet on more than one occasion.

His combative style upset the visitors, and Brendan Rodgers’ side struggled to create many clear-cut chances before Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s sending-off before the break.

A refusal to allow the Reds to settle on the ball provided United with a sturdy platform to build on, and the likes of Moussa Sissoko and goalscorer Yohan Cabaye benefited in an attacking sense.

Newcastle were much the better side before the red card and subsequent penalty, and much of that was down to the precision and persistence of Tiote.

Tiote was labelled by some sections of the club’s support as a liability last season, but those fans were made to backtrack on Saturday.

Though his responsibilities changed somewhat as Liverpool looked to take control in the second half, the 27-year-old never took his eye off the ball and made some crucial interventions.

And as the game wore on and the visitors went looking for a late winner, it was Tiote, more often than not, who frustrated their efforts.

Having faced competition this season from Dutchman Vurnon Anita, his performance should guarantee a place in Alan Pardew’s starting XI for next weekend’s derby at Sunderland.
