Biggest World Football Blunders of the Weekend with Ronaldo, Ribery, Diego Costa

Greg JohnsonOct 6, 2013

This week's roundup of the biggest world football blunders of the weekend features some of the biggest players around: Cristiano Ronaldo, Franck Ribery, Diego Costa and, er, Martin Olsson.

Miskicks are the central theme of this collection with Ronaldo going for the spectacular and ending up looking silly, Phillipe Mexes bringing his job title of Serie A defender into disrepute and Ezequiel Lavezzi pulling off a bit of camera trickery.

Click here if you missed last week's edition, which included Gareth Bale sticking the boot into Thibaut Courtois, a swamp diving Lithuanian goalscorer and Robinho beating his personal best for poor finishing.

To get us underway with this latest batch of schadenfreude, calamity and gaffes, hit the orange button below or head for the arrows as we begin our countdown.

Ribery Bends Lars All out of Shape

1 of 8

Without going all Alan Hansen and dismissing Ribery's undoubted skill, Lars Bender really should do better in the clip above, and that's what qualifies it as the opening entry of this week's selection.

The Bayer Levekusen enforcer is thrown left by the Frenchman's first dummy, casting an expression of terrified realisation across the midfielder's face before falling to the floor as he attempts to shift his balance.

His clumsy collapse may have come to nought with the ball eventually blasted clear from Ribery's feet, but it's a perfect example of the problems the reigning World Player of the Year continues to cause opponents as he cuts in from the wings for Bayern Munich.

In the same game, the winger also took a moment to greet and kiss a fan who had wandered onto the pitch by the corner flag.

Diego Costa's His Side a Penalty

2 of 8

Atletico Madrid trickster and professional football troll Diego Costa scored a brace at the weekend to secure his side a 2-1 win over Celta Vigo.

Yet they could have added another goal to their tally had their antagonistic talisman converted his penalty.

Instead, his tame attempt was saved, with his Atletico teammates unable to capitalise on the resulting rebounds.

Brazil-born Costa has just been called up to the Vicente Del Bosque's Spain squad and could be capped during the international break.

No Ball, All Air for Olsson Against Chelsea

3 of 8

To England and the Norwich City's 3-1 Premier League home defeat to Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

How different the result could have been if summer signing Martin Olsson had been able to connect with the ball and take a shot on the 81st minute.

Instead as the ball rolled on, the Swedish full-back forgot to adjust his aim and fired a powerful, driving left kick into thin air, which spun him to the ground.

Chelsea went on to score twice in the 85th and 86th minutes through Eden Hazard and Willian to claim all three points at Carrow Road.

Oh, dear Martin.

Cristiano Ronaldo Forgets How to Ride a Bike

4 of 8

Even the world's very best players can fall foul of a blunder or two every now and again.

Real Madrid's iconic forward (formerly the most expensive player in the world) added an unexpected touch of hilarity to the highlight reel in his side's dramatic 3-2 away win against Levante.

With a cross coming in over the home team's penalty box, Ronaldo threw himself up in the air, attempting to hit the ball into the net with an acrobatic bicycle kick.

Unfortunately for the Portuguese, Sergio Ramos' head got there first.

In what could eventually develop into an awkward error of judgement all of its own, Ronaldo also launched a new range of boys underwear this week to plenty of online derision and jokes.

Make a note and look out for any mentions or related stories in future blunder roundups!

Camera Man Falls for the Oldest Prank in the Book from Lavezzi

5 of 8

After overcoming Olympique Marseille with only 10 men in an impressive comeback win, Paris Saint-Germain's Ezequiel Lavezzi expressed his delight by tripping up one of the on-pitch cameramen at full-time.

Sneaking up behind the camera operator and stealthily creeping round his side to crouch down in his path, the Argentinian pulled off one of the oldest pranks around, with the job of filming the post-match reaction distracting his victim.

Hopefully the fall didn't damage the poor guy's equipment.

Mexes Knocks His Own Back Heel Behind for a Corner

6 of 8

Mexes had a day to forget in AC Milan's 3-2 loss to Juventus after being sent off for punching Giorgio Chiellini and looking hopeless unconvincing at the back for his team.

His failed back heel in the 70th minute summed up his performance considering how sloppy and unnecessarily risky it was with Carlos Tevez on his tail and ready to pounce.

With Chiellini calling for a heavy sanctions against the dismissed Frenchman, Mexes may soon find himself punished with a lengthy ban once video evidence of his punch is reviewed.

Midweek Bonus 1: Kuban Keeper Stops, Drops, Rolls and Misses Header

7 of 8

Time now for Kuban Krasnodar's goalkeeping mishap in the Europa League mid-week.

It's not entirely clear what Aleksandir Belenov was attempting to do as the ball flew toward his goal, but perhaps the keeper was trying to get down low to head the danger away—only to miss the his target and watch as Valencia's Paco Alcacer raced in to score.

Unintentional Route 1 football from the La Liga side, gifted to them via Kazan's keeper lost in no man's land.

Midweek Bonus 2: Funny Futsal Free-Kick Finish

8 of 8

This week's breakdown of recent blunders ends on a detour into the weird and wonderful world of futsal.

In the clip above, the powerful forces of football farce are subverted, with a faked collision between two players giving way to a fierce driving shot straight into the opposition team's net.

Summoning blunders in order to score goals? We like it.
