UFC Fight Night 28 Results: What's Next for the Main Card Winners

Matt JuulMay 31, 2018

The UFC made a successful return to Brazil on Wednesday night for the promotion's third Fight Night event on Fox Sports 1.

The UFC Fight Night 28 card was headlined by a light-heavyweight scrap between surging contender Glover Teixeira and former The Ultimate Fighter winner Ryan Bader.

The Brazilian, despite being rocked in the opening round, battled back to finish Bader with strikes in the first frame, earning himself the next shot at the belt in the process.

While Teixeira's fate is pretty much decided, let's take a look at what's next for Wednesday night's main card winners.

Ali Bagautinov

1 of 6

Russian flyweight Ali Bagautinov was very impressive in his UFC debut on Wednesday night.

The Sambo practitioner looked great with his hands throughout the fight, tagging Marcos Vinicius early in the first round.

Bagautinov would eventually finish the Brazilian in the final frame via strikes for the TKO victory.

Now riding a nine-fight win streak, the Russian import could find himself on a fast track to the top 10 if he keeps coming up big.

I see him facing the winner of Chris Cariaso vs. Iliarde Santos or the winner of Phil Harris vs. John Lineker.

Rafael Natal

2 of 6

Extending his winning streak to three, UFC veteran Rafael Natal earned himself another solid win fighting in his native Brazil against Tor Troeng.

The thrilling Fight of the Night-winning battle had a few great highlights by Natal, such as his huge right hand that dropped Troeng in Round 2 and his tight guillotine choke attempt in the final frame.

The Brazilian just looked sharper and took advantage of the openings he was given during this impressive performance.

Natal will likely face a rising mid-tier middleweight next, perhaps a Brad Tavares.

Piotr Hallmann

3 of 6

UFC newcomer Piotr Hallmann showed some grit in his fight with Francisco Trinaldo.

The TUF Brazil alum had Hallmann hurt early in Round 1, briefly flooring him with body kicks before the Polish lightweight bounced back to action.

Trinaldo's energy seriously depleted in the second frame, with Hallmann scoring the better shots and takedowns before securing a slick kimura for the tapout win.

While the win is a nice one for the Octagon newcomer, the heavily stacked lightweight division will be tough waters to navigate.

Hallmann will likely face another lower-tier 155er next, perhaps an Al Iaquinta or a James Vick.

Joseph Benavidez

4 of 6

Joseph Benavidez once again proved why he's the top flyweight contender with his huge win over Jussier Formiga last night.

The Team Alpha Male product was the faster, more accurate fighter, showing off his powerful striking skills with the TKO finish of the Brazilian.

Already ranked as the No. 1 flyweight contender, Benavidez owns wins over almost half of the top-10 guys in the division, so another shot at the title is the only fight that makes sense for him right now.

Unless he wants one more tune-up match, I think the time is right for Demetrious Johnson vs. Benavidez 2.

Ronaldo Souza

5 of 6

Former Strikeforce champ Ronaldo Souza was very impressive with his win over Yushin Okami on Wednesday night.

"Jacare" showed off his powerful striking skills, finishing Okami with punches in the first round.

The jiu-jitsu ace has definitely improved his overall MMA game and is poised to make a title run now that he's made it five wins in a row.

I think Souza should face another another top-five opponent for his next match, like the winner of Michael Bisping vs. Mark Munoz.

Glover Teixeira

6 of 6

Brazilian light-heavyweight Glover Teixeira came up big fighting in his home country on Wednesday night, impressively finishing TUF alum Ryan Bader in the first round.

Despite being briefly rocked earlier in the frame, Teixeira was able to battle back and land a nice right-left combination to floor Bader before finishing him with hammerfists.

After the fight, the UFC announced that Teixeira, who's currently riding a 20-fight win streak, would get a shot at the belt and face the winner between champ Jon Jones and challenger Alexander Gustafsson.

Barring any injuries and the outcome of UFC 165's main event, I see this planning staying pretty much in place, with the Brazilian getting the next crack at the belt.
