UFC Fight Night 28 Results: Post-Fight Stock Report
UFC Fight Night 28 was a mild success.
After a rough start to Wednesday evening, the main card stepped it up. More specifically, the final three bouts delivered in a big way. We got three excellent finishes from three fighters ranked in the top five. Nothing to complain about there.
After a seven-day period of three fight cards, UFC Fight Night 28 definitely comes in last.
Here is your post-fight stock report following UFC Fight Night 28.
Stock Down: The Undercard (Minus Lucas Martins)
1 of 5If you watched all of the undercard and made it through alive, you deserve some sort of MMA fan medal. It was brutal.
The lone bright spot was Lucas Martins. He was able to provide a bit of excitement in his swift submission win. Outside of Martins, it was slim pickens.
The other four undercard bouts were very nearly worse than UFC 164's heavyweight battle between Soa Palelei and Nikita Krylov. That is saying a lot. What a chore it was to watch this particular undercard. And it wasn't too much of a shock.
The undercard was filled with fighters who are not at the "UFC level," so to speak. However, when trying to fill all their events these sorts of things will happen. It is time for the hardcore UFC fans to start picking and choosing what to watch.
Stock Up: Tor Troeng
2 of 5Tor Troeng made his name on The Ultimate Fighter and then picked up a win over castmate Adam Cella in Sweden earlier this year.
He has never been overly impressive, and he was brought in as someone Rafael "Sapo" Natal could look good against. Natal was a winner in four of his last five bouts, but had yet to make that next step up. This was his chance to look impressive.
He hurt Troeng, but couldn't put him away. He tried submissions, but couldn't elicit a tap. Troeng was game.
He may have lost the fight, but his toughness garnered him more fans. It will also earn him more UFC fights. If you are a fighter who goes after it, you will get more fights regardless of the losses. Troeng is that type of fighter.
Stock Down: Yushin Okami
3 of 5Yushin Okami entered as the No. 3-ranked middleweight, yet as the underdog to Jacare Souza.
Okami could have made a claim for another title shot with a win, but that was not the case. Souza looked fantastic. Where does Okami go from here?
Okami was finished by Anderson Silva and obliterated by Jacare. There is virtually no way he earns a title shot in the UFC. His fighting style is not very exciting, and it took him four years and a 10-2 record to earn his first shot.
Since losing his title bid, he is 3-2. He may not fall too far in the rankings, but he will fall too far to make a push for the title anytime soon. A crushing loss.
Stock Up: Jacare Souza
4 of 5Jacare Souza could not have pictured a better start to his UFC career.
He promptly choked Chris Camozzi out earlier in the year, and on Wednesday he took out Okami like no one had ever done before. His growth as a well-rounded MMA fighter has been fantastic to watch.
He came into the bout as the No. 5-ranked middleweight, but when the next rankings are released he will undoubtedly jump up.
Now, Jacare can join the talk for a potential title shot. He looked phenomenal against an elite middleweight. If the chips fall just right he could be the next challenger, and even if not, he should only have to win one more fight.
Stock Down: Glover Teixeira
5 of 5Glover Teixeira is the No. 2-ranked light heavyweight, won and earned a title shot. Why did his stock drop?
Because a non-top 10 fighter made him look beatable. Very beatable.
Ryan Bader was faster in the stand-up. He was crisp. Bader then hurt Teixeira, and perhaps could have finished had he not gotten over-aggressive. He left one small opening, and Teixeira nailed him.
Teixeira has leaped up the rankings ahead of Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida and others without beating a single top 10 fighter. He is 5-0 in the UFC and his marquee wins come against Rampage Jackson and Ryan Bader. Somehow that makes him the No. 2-ranked 205-pound fighter on the planet.
I don't oppose his title shot. Jon Jones has dominated the other contenders. At least Teixeira is a new face. However, Teixeira gave no reason to believe he is a threat to the champion. He is another slow, plodding light heavyweight that Jones matches up well against. And with no elite wins he shouldn't out-rank the elite of the division.
Bader's performance put Teixeira's stock in to perspective.
