Chelsea Transfer Rumours: Robert Lewandowski Is Excellent Backup Plan for Blues
All of the Wayne Rooney to Chelsea transfer rumors are meaningless if Manchester United refuses to allow the player to make the switch.
It’s wise, then, that Stamford Bridge begins to seriously explore alternate options to help bolster their attack for their upcoming Premier League campaign. That’s exactly what they’re doing, according to Alan Nixon of the Daily Mirror.
If Old Trafford declines the club’s final planned bid of £40 million, Jose Mourinho plans to turn his sights to disgruntled Borussia Dortmund star Robert Lewandowski.
After being refused a transfer to Bayern Munich this summer—the German club’s rival—the forward said he feels “a bit cheated,” per ESPN.co.uk.
He’d likely welcome a move to play in England with open arms too, despite his club recently upping the ante by raising his pay from a paltry £1.5 million this season to £6.6 million, according to German newspaper der Spiegel, per Agence France-Presse reporting.
While it may be a consolation after likely missing out on Rooney, Lewandowski would upgrade an already potent and budding Blues attack.
And attack is something Lewandowski does almost effortlessly. That isn’t the most vital skill needed, though. It takes a true scorer to not only get into position to make things happen, but to be able to consistently find the back of the net when having the chance.
Lewy doesn’t shrink in big moments, either. His four goals helped propel Dortmund over Real Madrid during their Champions League semifinal contest. Overall, he contributed 10 goals and two assists last year in the Champions League—the pinnacle of European football competition.
His efforts don’t end on the attack, though.
According to FIFA.com, the Polish international traveled an average of 11.1 kilometers per Champions League match last season. His tenacious activity and awareness on the pitch help him retreat effectively to help his teammates defensively after an attack fails.
A complete forward is something Mourinho’s side needs against their stiff English competition, and they might not get it from an aging and declining Fernando Torres this season.
For a club attempting to steal the Premier League trophy, it’s a move they’ll undoubtedly pull the trigger on—for whatever the price—if their German partners are willing to ship him to England. Dortmund would be wise to see it through, too. Getting something in return for their star player now instead of watching him walk away to Bayern next season for nothing is a no-brainer.
