EPL Transfer Rumours: Latest on Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini and More Buzz
Even though the new Premier League campaign is underway, the transfer window remains open and will continue to dominate headlines for a couple more weeks. There are still a few high-profile players who could be on the move before the window closes.
Getting deals done in the latter stages of the transfer period is always a bit tricky. Clubs are usually wary of moving a key asset with so little time to find a potential replacement, but that won't stop opposing managers from trying to upgrade their own squads.
Knowing that, let's examine some of the latest transfer talk making the rounds as clubs around the Premier League get their seasons started.
Rooney has been one of the top names bantered about throughout the summer. He remains a member of Manchester United, at least for now. While Chelsea have been the most aggressive pursuer, it sounds like another EPL club is about to make a late push to land him.
John Cross of the Daily Mirror reports Arsenal are watching their chances of signing Luis Suarez fade away and they are set to turn their attention to Rooney. The defending champions have stood firm in saying he's not for sale, though:
"However, Mirror Sport understands Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has made an approach to Manchester United and the Rooney camp was also sounded out this week.
United boss David Moyes is adamant that Rooney is not for sale.
But the striker remains unsettled and Arsenal are keen to see if a deal can be done.
"
The Arsenal attack features plenty of depth, but it could use a headliner to pair with Theo Walcott. Rooney would thrive in his more natural striker role alongside the likes of Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere.
Fellaini has been a productive member of the Everton squad for the past five seasons. He doesn't possess a lot of flash, but he could bring a solid work rate and versatility to any club. And with most of the top midfielders off the board, he's becoming a more intriguing option.
His release clause expired at the end of July, which could complicate matters, but Manchester United are still confident in their chances of signing him, according to Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail. He states Fellaini is also interested in the switch:
"Manchester United manager David Moyes is increasingly confident of signing Marouane Fellaini, while the Everton midfielder is also set on a move to Old Trafford.
The Belgian, 25, had a buy-out clause in his contract worth £23million but it expired at the end of July, when United were still chasing Cesc Fabregas.
"
Although Fellaini wouldn't bring the same type of creativity or attacking presence as Cesc Fabregas, he would still represent an upgrade for the United midfield. But he's a key piece for Everton, so David Moyes has some work to do if he wants to complete a deal with his former club.
Gareth Barry
At 32, Barry is no longer the all-around midfield asset he was during his prime. That said, he's still a steady contributor capable of making an impact at the top flight. Whether he would get enough opportunity to prove that with Manchester City is unclear.
Paul Joyce of the Daily Express reports his first-team chances will be limited under Manuel Pellegrini, which could signal the end of his stay. According to Joyce's report, Everton manager Roberto Martinez is interested in bringing the midfielder to Goodison Park on loan:
"Barry has not given up on forcing his way back into the England reckoning in the countdown to next summer's World Cup, but knows he must play in order to do so.
He is entering the final year of the contract he signed when arriving at City for £12m in 2009, and while Everton would have to broker some arrangement with City on Barry's £90,000-a-week wages Martinez is keen to explore the opportunity.
"
Everton are focused on getting back into the European football mix for next season. Barry would bring stability to the squad in a defensive role and would be a particularly valuable addition if Fellaini does, in fact, exit. It's an option worth considering for the Toffees.
