Arsenal Fan Traditions at the Emirates

James McNicholasJun 1, 2018

The Emirates Stadium only holds 60,000 people, but there are many more fans across the globe who would love to make a pilgrimage to North London.

The Arsenal match-day experience is something all Gunners supporters dream of experiencing one day.

Go to the next slide to discover some of the traditions you will witness, should you be lucky enough to make it to an Arsenal match.

The Pubs

The pre-match pint is as much part of English football as Boxing Day fixtures and the FA Cup.

Arsenal are blessed: when they moved from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium, they shifted a matter of metres. That means Gunners supporters are still able to visit the same public houses they've enjoyed for decades.

For first-time visitors, The Gunners pub is a great spot to visit. It is decked out in Arsenal memorabilia and is frequently home to rowdy singing on a match-day.

The Pies

The humble pie is a huge part of British football tradition.

Arsenal, being a typically-modern football club, have elevated their pies to gourmet status.

Piebury Corner was voted as offering the Premier League's best pie. Arsenal fans can choose from a steak and ale filling and order a "Tony Adams," or be more adventurous and choose a "Dennis Bergkamp," which contains chicken ham and leek.

There's no better way to line your stomach before a game.

The Shirts

Like all football supporters, Arsenal fans arrive at their fixtures bedecked in their club's colours.

However, Arsenal fans don't always wear the latest offering from Nike. There is an increasing trend to wear a retro offering, for example one of the Gunners' iconic shirts from the 1970s.

It's a fitting celebration of the club's famous history.

The Songs

Arsenal fans may not be the noisiest in the Premier League, but they still find their voice on occasion. When they sing in unison, the bowl of the Emirates Stadium reverberates to the sound.

The most iconic chant is surely "One Nil to the Arsenal," sung to the tune of "Go West" by the Village People.

Arsenal fans only wish their defence had been secure enough to hold that scoreline more often in recent seasons.

The Stands

5 of 6

The noisiest sections of the ground are at the North Bank and the Clock End.

The North Back Lower is home to the RedSectiona specially designated singing section for hardcore Arsenal fans. In this part of the ground, Gunners supporters stand up for the entire 90 minutes, defying the demands of the stewards to cheer their team on throughout.

The Clock End was renamed in 2010 after the famous Highbury stand. A clock face was even hung on the roof to emulate the old stand's iconic look.

The Rivalries

6 of 6

The life of a supporter is defined by rivalry.

Football is a tribal sport, with tribal traditions. The fan experience is one dominated by enmity. The travails of a rival bring as much joy as one's own victories.

At Arsenal, there is no greater rival than Tottenham Hotspur. The clubs' proximity is the primary cause of their mutual hatred, but in recent seasons they have become rivals for a Champions League place. This has only added to the tension.

Derby Day at the Emirates Stadium is something to behold, as the ground becomes a cauldron of rage and fury.

Please feel free to add your own traditions below. Thanks for reading.
