Barcelona Transfer News: Daniel Agger Can Help Bolster La Blaugrana Back Line
Having already spent big money to fortify their attacking ranks, Barcelona have now seemingly turned their attention towards shoring up their back line ahead of the new season. Reports today suggest that new boss Tata Martino has turned to Liverpool’s Daniel Agger in an attempt to bolster his defence, with Massimo Marioni of the Metro claiming that the Catalan giants have had a £15 million bid rejected this week.
The player's agent has implored the Spanish champions to increase their bid, whilst other murmurings suggest that Agger himself is open to a move, according to Paul Joyce of the Express.
A follow-up bid looks something of a formality.
It is easy to see why a club of Barcelona’s stature have targeted the Danish international. In his seven-and-a-half years on Merseyside, Agger has evolved into one of the Premier League’s top—if not underrated—central defenders, and at 28 years old, he is about to embark upon the peak years of his career.
But Agger's superb showings last season have obviously not gone unnoticed by the Spanish champions. With La Blaugrana about to embark on something of a new chapter themselves, a transitional phase could be afoot. For that reason, defensive solidity could be a key facet in Martino’s side getting off to a good start.
Agger brings this solidity in spades—decisive in the tackle, quick across the ground and a dominating aerial presence.
Aside from his notable defensive strengths, there is the question as to whether he would be a stylistic fit for Barcelona. Martino’s system will not deviate too much from that of his predecessor, Tito Vilanova, but as is the case with any new manager, subtle changes look set to be implemented
It is a system in which Agger can flourish. The influence of Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool’s subsequent shift towards a more possession-based philosophy have allowed the Dane to develop as a ball-playing centre-back. Last season, Agger was key in bringing the ball out from deep and confident playing short, sharp passes into the likes of Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva. Not to mention, as a left-footed player, he offers the back four an assured balance, a key trait in any side looking to build from deep.
So is a deal likely? Well, Liverpool will certainly fight tooth and nail to keep Agger.
Aside from his obviously qualities as a player, the Merseyside outfit look devoid of leadership after the departure of two of the club's most experienced players, Pepe Reina and Jamie Carragher.
The Dane has recently been appointed as the club’s vice captain, and to lose another one of the dressing room's dominant characters would be far from ideal for Rodgers. You suspect the Catalan side may have to up their bid significantly if they are to seriously test Liverpool’s resolve.
But ultimately, Barcelona are a tempting proposition for any player. They can offer Agger not only European football but a genuine opportunity to seize Champions League glory.
After three quarters of a decade on Merseyside, Agger might just fancy a shot at the Nou Camp.
