PGA Championship 2013: Total Coverage Hub for Day 3

Mike ChiariJun 3, 2018

Only four players have finished under par in the history of the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club, so most believed that the world's best golfers would have to grind and grit their way to a title.

But they have managed to conquer the course, which sets the stage for an exciting third round on Saturday.

Jason Dufner enters the day with a two-shot lead at nine-under par, but there is a large contingent of golfers still in contention. Based on the amount of low scores that were posted on Friday, Saturday promises to set the stage for one of the most exciting rounds of the year.

As good as it was to see guys scratch and claw at the Open Championship a few weeks ago, there is something to be said about witnessing the best golfers produce the lowest scores they possibly can.

That has been the case at Oak Hill thus far, and it should continue on Saturday.

Here is everything you need to know about Saturday's third round at the PGA Championship, including when and how to watch it, as well as the biggest storylines to keep track of.

Day 3 Leaderboard

When: Saturday, Aug. 10

Watch: TNT (11 a.m. ET - 2 p.m. ET) and CBS (2 p.m. ET - 7 p.m. ET)

Top Storylines to Watch

Can Jason Dufner Build on Second-Round 63?

Dufner has developed into one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour over the past couple of  years, but major championships continue to elude him. Dufner is very much in the thick of things right now at Oak Hill, though, as his second-round 63 tied the best score at a major, according to SportsCenter.

While it rained earlier in the day on Friday, conditions were perfect by the time Dufner took to the course. He certainly took advantage as he shot seven under and surged to the top of the leaderboard at nine under.

Adam Scott had to be feeling pretty good when he had the clubhouse lead at seven under, but Dufner and a host of others put up some low scores on a very generous golf course.

It will be interesting to see if Dufner can maintain the momentum. Dufner has been in contention in majors before only to fall apart in the closing rounds. He has to realize that having the 36-hole lead at the PGA Championship is a golden opportunity, though.

If he plays anything like he did on Friday, he will almost certainly seize that opportunity.

Will Tiger Woods Make Some Noise?

Woods hasn't won a major since the 2008 U.S. Open, and unless something miraculous happens this weekend, his drought will continue.

He double bogeyed the final hole on Thursday to finish the day at one-over par, and while there were some stretches where it seemed as though he was ready to break out on Friday, he was unable to make any headway as he shot an even-par 70.

Woods would have been in reasonable shape when the PGA Championship last took place at Oak Hill in 2003, but the scores are much lower this time around. In fact, Woods is 10 shots behind leader Jason Dufner, and he'll truly have to pull a rabbit out of his hat in order to even put himself in contention.

Perhaps Oak Hill simply isn't Woods' course as he has yet to shoot an under-par round there in the PGA Championship, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Woods has put himself in a spot where he'll have to shoot an incredible round like Dufner or Webb Simpson did on Friday in order to even have a chance.

At the same time, the leaders' scores figure to dip even lower, so Woods is probably losing a fighting battle at this point. Even so, golf is always more entertaining when he is playing well.

How Will the Course Play on Day 3?

Most believed that Oak Hill would truly test the mettle of PGA Championship participants this year, but that certainly wasn't true on Friday as 34 golfers shot under-par rounds.

While under-par rounds have been rare at Oak Hill in the past, the conditions have allowed for low scores this year. It remains to be seen if the first two days of the tournament were an aberration, or if the course will continue to play that way on the weekend.

Although it's hard to imagine another golfer breaking the course record, all signs point to low scores continuing to roll in.

Weather can often be the great equalizer in major championships, but many golfers dealt with rain on Friday and still managed to play great. According to Weather.com, rain shouldn't be a factor on Saturday, so there won't be many hindrances.

If the course plays easy once again on Saturday, then there is no telling what could happen. There are so many good golfers within a couple shots of the lead as it is, but the door is also open for guys that are five to seven shots behind. One good round could put them back in the mix.

With so much unpredictability involved, Saturday's third round should be an absolute treat to watch.
