Summer Transfer Window Gossip: Rooney, Capoue, Vertonghen, Downing
We were hoping to get through a speculation roundup without mentioning one of the holy transfer trinity of Wayne Rooney, Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez on Saturday.
But the Manchester United striker has ensured he could not be ignored as he took to Facebook to thank England manager Roy Hodgson for selecting him for the friendly against Scotland.
Tottenham do feature in the transfer stories but not for anything Real Madrid-related. This time the club are building toward the completion of a deal for a midfielder.
Read on to find out more.
Wayne Rooney: Manchester United to Chelsea
1 of 5When Sir Alex Ferguson claimed he would leave the Wayne Rooney situation to David Moyes, he must have heaved a sigh of relief.
The transfer saga featuring the England international is threatening to spin out of control—if it hasn't already—and the latest twist has seen the former Everton forward use social media to perhaps make a point, according to Neil Ashton of the Daily Mail.
England manager Roy Hodgson picked Rooney, who is a target for Chelsea, for his squad for the friendly against Scotland next week, despite the forward not playing for United due to a shoulder injury.
And the 27-year-old publicly thanked Hodgson for showing "faith and support" in him on his Facebook page.
David Maddock of the Daily Mirror claims the mention of a "competitive match" is telling after Moyes said injury had prevented Rooney from playing in the preseason.
Etienne Capoue: Toulouse to Tottenham
2 of 5Tottenham are on the verge of completing a deal to bring Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue to White Hart Lane, reports David Hytner of The Guardian.
The France international, 25, is set for a medical after the North London club agreed to a £9.5 million fee which could rise to £11.2 million subject to performance-related targets.
Capoue had also been linked with Cardiff City, but Bluebirds manager Malky Mackay admitted the player had chosen Tottenham as his next club, writes Jim Daly of the Daily Mirror.
Capoue will now battle with Sandro and Paulinho for a starting berth in central midfield for Tottenham in the new Premier League season.
Jan Vertonghen: Tottenham to Barcelona
3 of 5Tottenham are already involved in a tug of war with one major La Liga club and have no intention of becoming embroiled with another.
The White Hart Lane club have dismissed speculation linking defender Jan Vertonghen with a move to Barcelona during the current transfer window, according to Darren Lewis of the Daily Mirror.
The Spanish champions were reportedly considering the Belgium international after being warned off David Luiz and Thiago Silva, claims Lewis.
Juan Agudelo: New England Revolution to Stoke City
4 of 5Stoke City will add United States international Juan Agudelo to their squad on New Year's Day 2014, reports Graeme Yorke of the Daily Mail.
The 20-year-old striker is currently playing for the New England Revolution in the MLS but will move to the Premier League for Britannia Stadium manager Mark Hughes on a free transfer at the turn of the year.
Agudelo will become the fourth American player at Stoke, with Geoff Cameron, Maurice Edu and Brek Shea all currently representing the Potters.
Hughes will make the Colombia-born forward his third signing after the arrivals of Marc Muniesa and Erik Pieters so far this summer.
Stewart Downing: Liverpool to West Ham United
5 of 5West Ham United have made a bid for Liverpool winger Stewart Downing, reports Chris Bascombe of the Daily Telegraph.
The former Middlesbrough and Aston Villa player had been linked with a move to Newcastle United earlier this week, according to Paul Joyce of the Daily Express.
But Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has made an initial offer of £5 million for the England international. Liverpool are looking for a fee closer to £6 million for a player who cost the Reds a reported £20 million in July 2011 (via BBC Sport), claims Bascombe.
