Course Preview
Part of what makes a major memorable is the course. Playing on a course that challenges golfers hole after hole makes winning a major a huge accomplishment.
This year's PGA Championship will be no different. The East Course at Oak Hill Country Club is a par-70, 7,163-yard gauntlet that rewards ball-strikers who are able to place their shots while maintaining superior distance.
Here's a closer look at some of the holes that will define the action.
No. 5
Par 4
428 yards
Don't let the short yardage on this hole fool you—this hole will separate the contenders from the pretenders.
The driver will likely stay in the bag for most players here, as distance is not the issue but accuracy is. A winding creek just outside the fairway and right in front of the green will await errant drives and misplaced approach shots.
For those who can navigate their first two shots, opportunities for birdies exist. However, the high probability of hazard will see plenty of players shoot bogey here as well.
No. 6
Par 3
175 yards
Those looking to recover from a rough No. 5 will be happy to see a relatively easy par-3 hole at No. 6. Four players aced this hole back in 1989, and it should see plenty of players go after birdies throughout the week.
The green has been changed to make the hole more difficult since 1989, but with a distance that will allow most players to go short iron off the tee, we should see most golfers stick it on the green. From there, the conditions of the course will likely play a role in how many birdies we see.
It should be fun to watch as some of the most accurate strikers attempt to card aces of their own.
No. 17
Par 4
509 yards
You'll be hard-pressed to find many birdies here this week.
Players will need to make sure they maintain focus throughout the round, as this course saves one of the most difficult challenges for last. At 509 yards, it's a mammoth par-4. But the dogleg from left to right will challenge players off the tee.
Even an accurate, long drive doesn't put players in the clear, though. Four bunkers surround the green, and players will be challenged to be precise with their approach shots or risk going for bunker saves.
Most players will be fortunate to save par here as they finish out the round.
