Jose Aldo vs. Chan Sung Jung: UFC 163 Main Event Will Show Scarface's Dominance

Jun 2, 2018

When talking about the best pound-for-pound fighters in the UFC today, it's easy to forget Jose Aldo. On Saturday night, he'll remind us why he deserves to be in the conversation.

Aldo's reign of terror over the 145-pound division is on par with Jon Jones' dominance of the light heavyweight division and Georges St-Pierre's rule of the welterweights.

However, he rarely gets the respect he deserves when talking about the dominant champions of the sport.

The lack of attention and interest in the champion can be seen in the difference between the reported buyrate for the latest card he headlined (330,000 according to MMAPayout.com Blue Book) compared to the latest cards headlined by Jones (450,000), St-Pierre (950,000) and Silva (550,000).

Those numbers may indicate that he's not in the class of that triumvirate, but his record certainly does. Going back to his days as the WEC champion, he has six consecutive title defenses.

Considering those wins have come against the likes of Urijah Faber, former lightweight titleholder Frankie Edgar, former lightweight contender Kenny Florian and Chad Mendes, one can't argue that his wins have come against watered-down competition.

To see the kind of respect that Aldo deserves, one just has to look at the odds heading into Saturday's main event.

By all accounts, Chan Sung Jung is a worthy contender. He's 3-0 since making the transition to the UFC, has finished fights in just about every way imaginable and sets a pace that few can match. The latest odds from Bovada still peg Aldo as a minus-750 favorite.

Essentially, the oddsmakers are giving "The Korean Zombie" no chance. While you can't completely count him out just yet, the odds line up with reality. Aldo is too calculating, too explosive and too, well, everything to be considered anything other than a massive favorite.

And that's the mark of a great champion.

Anytime St-Pierre, Jones or Silva takes on a qualified opponent, he still winds up as a big favorite. Aldo's eight-year win streak speaks for itself. He's one of the truly elite talents in the sport and deserves to be mentioned alongside those champions.

He'll be serving up a friendly reminder of that fact on Saturday night.
