Arsenal Transfer News: Arsene Wenger's Comments on Luis Suarez Aren't Reassuring
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made it clear that the Gunners will show respect to Liverpool during their continued pursuit of star striker Luis Suarez.
Unfortunately for the club's supporters, in addition to respect, Wenger is once again showing a bit too much patience and confidence with the summer transfer window winding down. Much like past summers, Wenger appears to be in no rush to break the bank for a superstar, and we've seen the results of that approach.
The Gunners haven't won the Premier League in nearly 10 years and haven't reached the UEFA Champions League final since 2006, when Thierry Henry was the captain.
But instead of instilling confidence in the club's fans by making a commitment to improve and sign the best players, Wenger's recent remarks on Suarez and the transfer window lack certainty, and have to worry Arsenal fans.
Here's what Wenger had to say about the club's pursuit of Suarez, per The Mirror's Jim Daly:
"I don't want to speak about Suarez, because that is between Liverpool and Arsenal. We will completely respect what Liverpool wants to do. We want to (sign the player) if it is feasible in an amicable way.
I am a great believer you have to keep as much confidentiality as possible, which is quite difficult in the modern world.
But we work very hard, not only on the case you name, but on other different cases.
"
Wenger's desire to be respectful to the players he is chasing and their current club is all well and good, but what if Arsenal miss out on Suarez?
Arsenal fans aren't going to commend him for going about it the right way if he fails to acquire the talent. The Gunners are in no position to sit back and wait for the market to change. Wenger has got to be more aggressive this summer, and make it known that he's going all-in to put a better starting XI on the pitch next season.
Beyond the Suarez chatter, Wenger also addressed Arsenal's lack of moves this summer, defending himself and the club by pointing to the fact that few other squads have made big-time additions this offseason, per Daly:
"We can still strengthen the squad, there is one month to go. We are at the beginning of August, the transfer window finishes on August 31. We are working very hard to strengthen our squad.
I am confident. You look at many teams around us. Nothing has happened until now. This team with financial potential as well.
At the moment the market hasn't moved a lot. Apart from Man City, nobody has done anything.
"
Wenger may be right, but making excuses isn't going to relieve pressure from fans and the media. This coming season will be all about results for Arsenal, and if the club can't bring in any elite talent (namely Suarez) before the transfer window closes, the blame will fall on Wenger, whose past confidence hasn't resulted in the level of play fans have been hoping for.
Gunners fans have seen this movie before. It was the same story last summer, as Arsenal saw their top player, Robin van Persie leave for Old Trafford.
The squad still managed to finish in the top four and earn a Champions League berth this coming season, but Arsenal were never able to replace van Persie's production and were never challenging for the Premier League title.
With little to show for their efforts thus far, Wenger and Arsenal are desperate to land Suarez this August in order to salvage the summer.
