Aldo vs. Jung Results: Junior Defeats the Korean Zombie Via 4th-Round TKO

Donald WoodAug 3, 2013

In the main event of UFC 163, defending featherweight champion Jose "Junior" Aldo defeated challenger Chan Sung "The Korean Zombie" Jung via fourth-round TKO.

It was yet another display of Aldo's dominance of the featherweight division Saturday night from HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Junior utilized his striking ability and grappling to build up a lead on the scorecards in the first three rounds. When the Korean Zombie suffered an apparent shoulder injury in the fourth, Aldo capitalized and came away with the finish via strikes.

This marks Aldo’s fifth straight title defense in the UFC, his seventh straight successful title defense overall (was the last reigning WEC featherweight champion) and his 16th straight victory in MMA.

With Anderson Silva’s recent loss to Chris Weidman and Aldo’s win over a juggernaut like the Korean Zombie, Saturday night’s performance launches the featherweight champion into the conversation as the toughest pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC today.

There is no discounting the talent Jung possesses in the Octagon, but Aldo proved he has the speed and power—not to mention the experience—needed to not only retain the championship, but also build a legacy as the greatest featherweight in MMA history.

Many fans questioned how well Aldo would bounce back from an all-out war with Frankie Edgar at UFC 156 (awarded Fight of the Night honors), but the victory over Jung should silence the critics and answer any questions about his longevity as champion.

While Saturday’s victory only bolsters Aldo’s status as the top dog in the division, Dana White and the UFC matchmakers will be back to the drawing board immediately to find a star worthy of challenging for the title next time.

There are several names that have earned a shot to be the next No. 1 contender—a case could be made for Ricardo Lamas, Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson—but no fighter deserves it more than Chad Mendes.

Anthony Pettis was originally supposed to challenge Aldo in his fight against the Korean Zombie, per MMAJunkie, but until he is fully recovered from the meniscus tear in his knee, via MMA Torch, Mendes will get the title shot over Pettis.

Mendes lost to Aldo in their first meeting via knockout, and after beating Darren Elkins, Yaotzin Meza and Cody McKenzie in his last three fights, the 28-year-old American has launched himself into the conversation to become No. 1 contender again.

As the No. 1-ranked challenger in the UFC.com rankings, as long as Mendes takes care of Clay Guida at UFC 164, Aldo will know who his next opponent will be.

Until then, the Brazilian champion continues his reign of destruction.
