Wilfried Zaha, Not Bale or Cesc, Can Be the Face of David Moyes' Man United Team
Somewhere in the midst of all the commotion of whether or not David Moyes is the right manager for Manchester United and the arguments over whether or not he can attract top players, a handful of youngsters have been enjoying break-out preseasons for the Red Devils.
Of course, it's still early in the summer, and the final two weeks before the season starts are usually when the seniors take centre stage and the opposition becomes more difficult to deal with.
United have, so far, played against fairly modest opposition on three occasions in Asia; a defeat to Yokohama F Marinos was followed by a draw at Cerezo Osaka and Monday's win over Kitchee in Hong Kong.
Moyes, at this time, is still likely taking stock of the options available to him while he tries to strengthen the squad in the transfer market, but those at the club will have been utilising the past few weeks to prove that their particular position needs no further investment.
New arrival at Old Trafford, Wilfried Zaha, might have succeeded more than most in that regard.
Fellow youngsters Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj have showcased their talents and may have done enough to warrant a spot in the first team squad in general going forward, but it is Zaha, a January arrival from Crystal Palace, who has really grabbed the limelight this summer.
The new United boss has so far been thwarted in his attempts to Thiago Alcantara (via the Telegraph), now of Bayern Munich, as well as Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas (as per The Independent) and Spurs' Gareth Bale (as per Mirror Football) this summer, as he looks to stamp his own authority and imagination on an already hugely successful club.
With no Moyes-specific new name on the team sheet so far, how can Moyes insinuate this is his own team?
By playing, and integrating well into the side, somebody who has so far not played for the club.
Zaha joined United in January but spent the remainder of the campaign at Palace, as he helped them into the Premier League via the playoffs.
United cantered to the league title last season, but there remained a sense that there were still certain improvements which could be made to the side, and the inadequate form of Nani, the inconsistency of Antonio Valencia and the injuries to Ashley Young mean that the wings are certainly one such area.
Zaha has so far in preseason shown that he can have a good impact in the United first team, with tremendous pace and skill on the ball so far mirrored by an interestingly consistent end product.
That could all easily change once competitive action gets underway, of course, but the signs are there that Zaha is ready not just for Premier League football but Premier League football with Manchester United.
He might take some weeks to get used to the game at the top level and he might be initially used off the bench. But however Moyes opts to field him, Zaha looks to have the right mix of physical and technical talents to have an impact for United at the start of the season.
And in so doing, he could make himself the new big name for David Moyes' Manchester United, regardless of who the club eventually manage to entice this summer.
