Snooker World Games 2013 Results: Aditya Mehta Is Favorite for Title After Win

Joe StrangeJul 29, 2013

Aditya Mehta remains on course to win the 2013 World Snooker Games after a surprise comeback victory over pre-tournament favourite Joe Perry.

Despite a comfortable 3-0 win in his first-round match against Luis Lemus of Guatemala, Mehta was expected to struggle against the more experienced Perry.

But the Indian found some of his best form in the quarter-final match, emerging with an impressive 3-2 victory over a man currently ranked No. 19 in the world, according to snooker.org.

Perry, who won his first and only ranking tournament at the Yixing Open earlier this year, started strongly and won the first frame.

Mehta immediately battled back and took the second frame before Perry regained the advantage by winning the third.

The Englishman appeared to be on the verge of reaching the semi-final as he took a commanding lead in the fourth frame, only for Mehta to steal it at the death.

Mehta had built momentum and he dominated the fifth and final set confidently, managing a break of 50 that Perry had no answer for.

After defeating the highest-ranked player in the competition, Mehta is the man most likely to go all the way and win the tournament.

Currently 74th in the world rankings, Mehta won silver and bronze medals at the 2010 Asian Games but will be fully focused on coming out on top at the World Games.

There will be no all-Indian semi-final after Dechawat Poomjaeng of Thailand beat Pankaj Advani 3-1.

The other semi-final sees China's Liang Wenbo take on Brazil's Igor Figueiredo after they beat Great Britain's Nigel Bond and China's Lyu Haotian respectively.
