Liverpool Transfer News: Moving Fabio Borini Would Be Mistake by Reds
Fabio Borini was unable to make a major impact during his first season with Liverpool. Even though frustration mounted as injury woes held him back throughout the campaign, the Reds shouldn't consider moving the striker already.
Amid transfer talk linking Borini to Serie A side Lazio, Mike Whalley of ESPN passed along comments made by his agent, Marco De Marchi, to Italian outlet Radiosei downplaying the recent speculation. He states there's been no contact involving a potential deal.
""I can confirm that Lazio sporting director Igli Tare has always been a fan of Fabio, but I have not had any contact with Lazio.
"What I can assure you is that Borini is concentrating on doing well for Liverpool to beat the competition for places in attack.
"At this moment, he only has Liverpool in his mind. We are talking about one of the greatest clubs in the world."
"
Two extended injury absences derailed any chance of Borini finding top form during his first season at Anfield. But after fighting through foot and shoulder problems and playing for Italy in the European U-21 Championship, he should be ready to roll for the new campaign.
Knowing that, Liverpool can't afford to give up on him just because his first season with the club didn't go exactly according to plan. Injuries prevented him from contributing much to the attack, but there's no reason he can't enjoy a turnaround with the Reds.
After all, he's a 22-year-old striker who showed off a nice finishing touch during his short stay with Roma. Players with that type of upside deserve more than one season to prove themselves.
It's especially important for Liverpool to have depth on the attack.
The future of Luis Suarez remains very much in question. The latest development, according to Declan Warrington of the Daily Mail, is a massive offer from Arsenal for the superstar.
"Arsene Wenger believes the talented Uruguay forward can inspire Arsenal to the Premier League title and has consequently sanctioned an offer for him in excess of a club-record £40million.
A bid of £40m would trigger a complex clause in Suarez's contract but Arsenal are understood to be offering an initial £35m and a further £7m in add-ons, meaning there is no certainty that Liverpool will accept.
"
Ultimately, the saga is likely to take several more turns before the the new season beings, but the Reds must be prepared for any potential outcome. That includes entering the campaign without Suarez available to lead the attack.
Borini would become a much bigger asset under that scenario. He, along with the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Iago Aspas, would be expected to pick up the scoring slack.
No single player on the Liverpool roster would be able to fill the void.
A group effort, similar to what Arsenal used last season after the departure of Robin van Persie, could minimize the overall impact. And in-form Borini would definitely help.
So it's good news that no clubs have made an official approach for Borini. Liverpool should remain focused on building their attack as they look to get back in Champions League contention.
Borini has the skills to help in that journey. He just needs to stay healthy for an entire season so he can prove it, which didn't happen last season.
Liverpool should afford him that opportunity in the upcoming campaign.
