Manchester United Transfer Rumours: David Moyes' Tenure Hinges on Gareth Bale
Success is guaranteed for David Moyes if he can convince Gareth Bale to join Manchester United.
According to Mark Ogden of the Daily Telegraph, the Reds' boss is set to launch an audacious bid to sign the Welsh international from Premier League rivals Tottenham.
He desperately needs a couple of high-profile signings to quell fans’ fears and keep pace with Manchester City and Chelsea, who have already invested ahead of the new season.
Ogden writes that United are hopeful of securing a deal to bring Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas to Old Trafford before testing Spurs’ resolve by going after Bale.
With Wayne Rooney's future highly uncertain following a BBC Sport report that Chelsea made a bid for the England international, United need a new attacking option to relieve the pressure on Dutch striker Robin van Persie.
United’s wingers were bereft of ideas last season, with Ashley Young, Nani and Antonio Valencia struggling to produce anything of note.
If it hadn't been for the potency of Van Persie or the consistency of Michael Carrick—not to mention their rivals’ profligacy—Sir Alex Ferguson may have retired a Premier League runner-up.
Bale’s ability to play on the flank or behind a striker makes him the ideal purchase. His 21 league goals were the sole reason Spurs challenged for a top-four place last season and he has all the attributes to propel United to domestic and European honours.
But if Moyes can’t convince a player destined for another season in the Europa League that Old Trafford is the right move, then he’s really going to struggle.
Signing Bale would maintain United’s aura and prevent teams from believing they can upset the champions now that the reign of Ferguson is over.
Any move will involve a hefty fee, with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy renowned for his stubbornness in the transfer window. Spurs fans had thought the player was staying put after appearing on the FIFA 14 cover in their home strip, but United’s interest threatens to change everything.
Moyes needs to stamp his authority on the Premier League and show that United have no intention of relinquishing their throne as England’s greatest team.
Landing Bale would do just that.
