Zach Johnson scored a five-under 66 to lead the Open Championship after Thursday's opening round, but comments from two high-profile players threatened to overshadow the Muirfield event.
Ian Poulter and Phil Mickelson criticised the tournament organisers after their rounds of 72 and 69, respectively, according to the BBC.
Poulter suggested Muirfield was playing like a crazy golf course, as the Englishman noted that the 18th hole needed a “windmill and a clown face”. Mickelson also went on the attack, saying he hoped that the organisers would “let go of their ego” after he criticised the pin positions.
