Several notable names are in contention through the first round, including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Jordan Spieth, the 19-year-old out of Dallas, is also holding his own.

Notable Names

Zach Johnson

Zach Johnson came out blazing on Thursday at Muirfield, posting three birdies and one eagle on the front nine alone. He added another birdie on the back nine. His only real hiccup of the day was at hole No. 14, where he scored a bogey. Everything else was birdies, eagles and pars.

Mark O'Meara

Mark O'Meara, the 1998 Masters and British Open champion, also had a fantastic front nine, notching five birdies. He had some trouble on the back nine, posting a bogey on No. 10, No. 14 and No. 15, but he finished with a par on 16, an eagle on 17 and a par on 18.

Miguel Angel Jimenez

Miguel Angel Jimenez has never won a major in his career, but he's racked up eight top-10 finishes in majors. That includes a ninth-place finish at the British Open last year. The 49-year-old had a sensational start on Thursday, posting five birdies in his first nine holes. He posted two bogeys on the back nine.

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson, who placed second at the British Open in 2011 and ninth in 2012, is once again performing well at the major. He registered four birdies on the front nine, but, like O'Meara, posted three bogeys on the back nine. He also scored an eagle on No. 17.

Brandt Snedeker

After missing the cut at both the Memorial Tournament and the FedEx St. Jude Classic, Snedeker has eased his way back to fine playing form. After placing eighth at AT&T National, he scored a three-under 68 on Thursday at Muirfield. The 32-year-old American posted an ugly double bogey on No. 6, but he still managed to notch three birdies on the front nine. He added three birdies on the back nine. Overall, he was solid on Thursday.

Tom Lehman

The 1996 British Open champion actually had a worse time on the front nine than the back nine on Thursday, which was rare for the field. He did post three birdies on the front nine, but he also notched bogeys on No. 1 and No. 8. The 54-year-old ended the day with consecutive birdies.

Todd Hamilton

The 2004 British Open winner had a back-and-forth adventure on the front nine on Thursday, scoring two birdies to go along with his two bogeys. On the back nine, he settled down, notching two more birdies. Since Hamilton won the Claret Jug in 2004, he's missed the cut six times. That includes missing the cut in his last four appearances. Looks like he won't be missing it this year.

Phil Mickelson

Well, it looks like Phil Mickelson is riding the momentum from winning the Scottish Open. He notched two birdies to one bogey on the front nine on Thursday, then posted two birdies to one bogey on the back nine. On the other hand, Mickelson's last bogey came on No. 18. Hopefully that doesn't carry over to the next round.

Angel Cabrera

Angel Cabrera, who won the U.S. Open in 2007 and the Masters in 2009, notched a two-under 69 on Thursday. He posted three birdies to one bogey on the front nine, while registering two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine. He bogeyed No. 19. The last time Cabrera finished in the top 10 at the British Open was in 2006.

Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth may be 19 years old, but he's playing like a veteran lately. After winning the John Deere Classic (in a playoff, no less), he posted a two-under 69 on Thursday at Muirfield. He notched two birdies and one bogey on the front nine and posted another birdie on No. 17. This kid is rolling.

Tiger Woods

Tiger has racked up five top-10 finishes, including four victories, on the PGA Tour this season, but he placed 65th at the Memorial Tournament and 32nd at the U.S. Open ahead of the British Open. Well, he seemed to straighten things out on Thursday. The three-time British Open champ posted two bogeys to one birdie on the front nine, but he came roaring back on the back nine, notching four birdies to one bogey.
