Tiger Woods hasn't won a major championship since his victory at the 2008 U.S. Open, so it should come as no surprise that he is the biggest story in this tournament. Even when Woods was struggling mightily, he was still the player that everyone wanted to see. Woods has been a bit iffy as of late as he is dealing with an elbow injury, according to Ryan Lavner of Golf Channel, but he does have four wins this year and has had success at courses similar to Muirfield in makeup.
Woods had a disappointing showing at the U.S. Open, although he was very much in contention at The Masters and finished fourth. Woods' main issue probably over the past couple years has been closing the deal. He often seems to be in contention at majors, but he simply hasn't found a way to win. Perhaps that will change at the Open Championship.
While 2013 hasn't been a great year for Phil Mickelson, he seems to have found his groove lately. Lefty entered the Open Championship coming off a Scottish Open victory, which was his second overall win of the year. Before that, Mickelson was very good in the U.S. Open, and he narrowly missed winning the tournament for the first time in his illustrious career as he finished second to Justin Rose.
Mickelson has bounced back nicely from the disappointment, though, and it can be argued that he had more momentum than anyone ahead of the British Open. That could be huge for Mickelson, as he is a streaky player who deals with plenty of momentum swings over the course of a tournament. It remains to be seen if his Scottish Open triumph will lead him to his first Open Championship win, but he has to be feeling pretty confident in himself.
Justin Rose
As the U.S. Open Champion, Justin Rose has finally reached the potential that most golf pundits knew he could. He was always on the precipice of winning majors, but he simply couldn't break through. The talent was always there, however, Rose didn't seem to have the confidence necessary to close the deal. That is no longer a concern as Rose is now among the top contenders to win the Open Championship and make it two majors in a row.
Being from England, Rose is very familiar with links courses in the same mold as Muirfield. The Open Championship hasn't really been good to Rose as his best finish came all the way back in 1998 when he came in fourth as the low amateur. Even so, Rose has the skill set needed to win this title. Winning two straight majors is incredibly difficult to do in this day and age, but Rose shouldn't be written off.
