Manchester United Transfer News: Red Devils Must Move on from Cesc Fabregas
It doesn't appear as if Manchester United's interest in veteran midfield talent Cesc Fabregas is mutual, which means it's time for the club to search in a different direction.
According to the Mirror's Alex Hankin, Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova has spoken to Fabregas, and the 26-year-old Spaniard has made it clear he wants to remain at Camp Nou:
"Vilanova said at a press conference this morning: "I'm aware there have been offers, I had a conversation with him [Cesc Fabregas] and he told me that he wanted to continue here and that he didn't want to go to another big club.
"He wants to succeed here."
"
With all indications suggesting that Fabregas is content to continue his time with Barcelona, first-year manager David Moyes must quickly shift gears and focus his attention and the Red Devils' available finances on Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini, whom United has already targeted this summer, according to The Guardian's Jamie Jackson.
The 25-year-old Belgian has exploded onto the Premier League scene with Everton over the course of the past five seasons, scoring 25 goals in 138 league appearances for Moyes' former club since coming over from the Belgian Pro League.
Fellaini offers incredible versatility for a club like United. At 6'4", he can star in defense or offensively around the penalty area. He scored 12 goals a season ago for the sixth-place Toffees.
He routinely uses his above-average size to his advantage and adds a unique element to a squad's midfield. If need be, Fellaini, who boasts tremendous technique, can play deeper in the lineup or in a holding role.
Clearly, Moyes has already established a decent relationship with Fellaini and would love to bring him aboard. Although he would prefer to welcome both Fabregas and Fellaini to Old Trafford this summer, the Spaniard's reported lack of interest has made the Everton man that much more coveted.
It's time for United to focus its energy on Moyes' former player or begin looking elsewhere for potential goal-getting midfielders.
With Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney currently on the roster (38 combined goals in league play in 2012-13), United isn't nearly as desperate for goalscorers as some of the fringe contenders in the Premier League.
There's no doubt that Cesc Fabregas would add a much-needed element to Manchester United's new-look midfield in 2013-14, but if he's not interested, the Red Devils can't afford to waste any more time.
The search must continue.
