Biggest Boom and Bust Players to Watch
Biggest Boom: Phil Mickelson
After finishing second at the U.S. Open over the tough Merion Golf Club and then winning the Scottish Open at an impressive 17-under, the favorite for a possible win has to be the red-hot Mickelson.
Mickelson has never won the British Open—only finishing better than 10th twice in his career—but with his success on courses similar to Muirfield and the momentum from such a strong season, this could be the year the American steals the show.
While there are many fans concerned by the fact that he missed the cut at the Greenbrier Classic in early July, the fact that he bounced back at the Scottish Open to win in similar weather conditions as he’ll have at the British Open is a great sign for Lefty.
This will be Mickelson’s best chance at an Open Championship.
Predicted Finish: British Open Winner
Biggest Bust: Tiger Woods
Woods is viewed as one of the greatest golfers of all time, but he has been a shell of the man who dominated the sport for so many years. While four wins in 2013 is a step in the right direction, Woods has faltered in majors.
While his previous British Open victories are good for his odds of winning, the fact that he shot a plus-13 at Merion Golf Club in the U.S. Open—a course layout and style similar to what he’ll find at Muirfield—is a bad omen for his week ahead in Scotland.
Add in the fact that Woods hasn’t played since the U.S. Open while recovering from an elbow injury, per Steve DiMeglio of USA Today, and the stage has been set for the veteran to struggle.
Predicted Finish: Tied for 42nd
