WWE Debate: Bray Wyatt and the Fans' Tendency to Not Give Stars a Chance

Shalaj LawaniaJun 8, 2018

The wrestling crowd is a relentless, polarizing and crudely rough one.

There's nothing particularly groundbreaking about that audacious statement, nor has it been a clandestine sentiment over the years. The wrestling business itself is a rough one, so at the end of the day all they do is complement each other.

That being said, we are also a hypocritical bunch. We are the ones who demand character evolution for stagnant characters, new aspiring superstars excelling at other promotions or developmental to make the jump to the WWE roster or even a complete overhaul from the monotony we had grown accustomed to.

We demand all that, and when we're offered most of it on a golden plate we ridicule it.

Bray Wyatt recently debuted on Monday Night Raw. If you've been following his work on NXT, or are just aware of good wrestling characters and gimmicks, you would know this character has potential for good television - WWE television that you will be compelled to watch, and not just mindlessly sit through.

Even if you hadn't heard of the Eater of the Worlds, his introductory promos on Raw were terrifying yet morbidly interesting vignettes. The Wyatt Family is group of good wrestlers (look up Brodie Lee), led by a leader who knows how to give exceptional promos.

All I ask is that you give them a chance. Chanting 'Husky Harris' whenever he's on TV is not giving him a chance.

There is a certain decisive line that separates crowd reactions that help and those that hinder. A crowd dancing along to Fandango's tune is a nice fun crowd to be a part of. It improves the fans' connection with the character and even makes him a popular entity in and out of WWE. However, mindlessly chanting 'You can't wrestle!' at the same Fandango despite knowing well he definitely can is unnecessary and horribly irksome.

As overzealous wrestling fans, we tend to lose ourselves in the moment and at times create spectacles worth remembering, or we force out bad television. There's no denying that we control most creative decisions. John Cena is still the prime time player in WWE because he brings in a gush of ratings. Zack Ryder, Daniel Bryan and the Shield members are individuals that jetted through the WWE hierarchy because they were beloved fan favorites.

Knowing that, we should shoulder a sense of responsibility when exploiting this limitless power. Our absolute indifference and arrogant dismissal of anything Lord Tensai had to offer coupled with our determination to not let him move past his Albert gimmick has reduced him to a dancing dinosaur gimmick.

We were the fans who never let Ryback forget that there was a wrestling legend named Goldberg by chanting it throughout his matches, despite his contrasting gimmick and move set. Not only that, we even try to hinder any character development, and try to promote the staleness we so publicly hate.

We are the ones who incessantly chant 'What?' and 'Sexual Chocolate!' in every Mark Henry promo, interfering with any credibility the World's Strongest Man tries to create.

There are certain crowd reactions that lost their coolness many years ago, it's about time we recognize them and lock them up in our memories.

I'm not saying a crowd shouldn't be able to expend negative energy towards superstars. Faces and heels make this business and they expect you to cheer or boo them. But there's a slight difference, and it's about knowing the difference between good heel reactions and idiotic annoying reactions.

As fans, a large portion of the show's success depends on us. It's definitely our job, as lovers of this business, to make sure we do all we can to enhance and sustain this form of entertainment. It's great if we have fun in the process, but at times what constitutes as fun in our books is hurting the very show we watch regularly and then criticize on internet forums.

Shalaj Lawania is known for his disappearing acts, because being there all the time is too mainstream. Do show him love, he needs it. For more love, you can follow him on Twitter if you have a good annoying tweets threshold. For the rest, use Wikipedia.
