Manchester United Invite Fans to Pitch in for Piece of Old Trafford History
Manchester United have revealed a unique competition for supporters in which the winners can claim a piece of club history, via the team's official website.
The Old Trafford pitch is being replaced this summer for the first time in 10 years as United prepare for their Premier League defence under new manager David Moyes.
To commemorate the turf replacement, United are digging up areas of the pitch where significant events have been played out since 2003.
Key moments included in the turf competition include the spot where Wayne Rooney struck his bicycle kick to seal victory over local rivals Manchester City in February 2011.
The location of Michael Owen's 96th-minute winner in the 4-3 Manchester derby victory in September 2009 and the stunning free-kick of Cristiano Ronaldo against Portsmouth in January 2008 are also among the possible places fans could own.
The grass where Robin van Persie fired home his tremendous volley against Aston Villa last season to help United regain the Premier League title is also among the possible prizes.
But the fun part of the competition comes with the video accompanying the competition.
Former United players Andy Cole and Lee Sharpe attempt to re-enact pieces of Old Trafford history before a security guard can warn them off the turf.
The pair actually produce some exceptional replica moments, but you should judge for yourself via the competition page on ManUtd.com.
Fans are also invited to send in their own re-imagining of iconic moments of the past 10 years with the five winners claiming a piece of turf, but general entry to the competition merely requires a nomination for a favourite Old Trafford moment.
One hundred pieces of turf are available with 25 being from the exact spot where an iconic United moment took place at Old Trafford.
The winners will receive their piece of the old pitch in a presentation box along with a certificate of authenticity from the club.
We cannot guarantee supporters requesting the place where Mario Balotelli opened the scoring for Manchester City in the 6-1 win in October 2011 and the place where Nani was dismissed during last season's Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid in March will be welcome, but opposition fans can always try.
