Chelsea Transfer News: Jose Mourinho and Blues Need to Forget About Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney has naturally been the topic of conversation this summer after he reportedly asked former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for a transfer late last season.
But new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and the Blues—and the rest of world football, for that matter—need to forget about landing the 27-year-old star.
Speaking at a press conference in Bangkok on United's preseason spell, new United manager David Moyes said emphatically, per Kevin Palmer of ESPN FC:
"It's hard to keep repeating myself but I will – Wayne is a Manchester United player and it will remain that way. I think Jose said, in his comments that he doesn't normally talk about other players. But it does happen.
"
Indeed it does. Mourinho has made it no secret that he desires to nab Rooney.
But Mourinho—and Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Arsenal—need to give it a rest. Rooney may have been a bit unhappy with his playing time under Ferguson, but he's under a new manager now. And Moyes has given no indication that he will be persuaded to sell the veteran striker.
Indeed, Rooney was sent back home on Thursday, but Moyes noted that it was because his hamstring tightened up, not because he's destined for a transfer, per the ESPN FC report.
Plus, Moyes used a lot of big words in his first press conference since replacing Ferguson on July 5.
You know, dropping names like Bobby Charlton and Denis Law.
Moyes said in the conference, per SkySports.com: "We're looking to see how we can get Wayne Rooney the goals to challenge the likes of Bobby Charlton and Denis Law."
Rooney is 53 goals away from surpassing Charlton for the club record of 249 scores.
There are times when a manager of a club should push for a player. There are times such effort gets rewarded. This is not one of those times.
Rooney's impact at United is undeniable. He's a leader for that club, registering 12 goals and 10 assists in 27 games (22 starts) last season in the Premier League.
And it appears he has patched things up with Moyes. It's hard to imagine Moyes keeping Rooney at bay in a pivotal Champions League match next season, that's for sure.
As rumors swirl around Old Trafford this summer, remember this fact: Wayne Rooney will not be sold.
Blues fans who expect Mourinho to land Rooney will be disappointed in the end.
