Michael Allen was the story of the day as he set the course on fire to seize sole control of the lead in Omaha. He started off the day by becoming one of multiple golfers who shot a 30 on the front nine, per the US Open Twitter:
"Michael Allen (-8) shoots 30 on the front, matching @teamriegger. It's the 3rd time multiple 30s have been shot in a #USSeniorOpen round.

He didn't slow down on the back nine, either. He upped his fairway percentage to 69 on the day after hitting just 48 percent. That, combined with his clutch putting, led to him shooting a 63 for the day. According to the US Open, he's now tied for the second-lowest score in tournament history:
"Michael Allen two putts from about 20 feet for a 63, which ties for the second lowest round in #USSeniorOpen history.

Rocco Mediate emerged as the top threat to catch up with Allen as the tournament progresses. His day was highlighted by three birdies, as he went three-under-par for the day and finished second on the leaderboard at five-under-par for the tournament.
After getting off to a strong start that saw him end the first day tied with seven other players atop the leaderboard, Fred Funk struggled to separate himself from the pack on Day 2 of the tournament. The 57-year-old hit just 77 percent of the fairways on his way to an even-par performance.
However, Funk's day wasn't nearly as difficult as Jay Don Blake's. Blake also ended Day 1 atop the leaderboard, but will have a tough road ahead, as he shot four-over-par on Day 2, adding seven strokes to his Day 1 score.
