Challenge Cup 2013: Must-See Matchups in Epic Rugby Tournament
Two wins is all that separates the Challenge Cup quarter-finalists from the final. Here we take a look at two crucial clashes as the excitement and pressure ramps up for the teams remaining.
Sunday, July 14—Warrington Wolves vs. Huddersfield Giants; Halliwell Jones Stadium, Warrington, England
The headline act of the Challenge Cup quarter-finals: Warrington vs. Huddersfield. The Super League’s second- and third-placed sides will do battle with both still harbouring ambitions of a league and cup double.

The winners will not only earn a semi-final spot but also momentum ahead of the league run-in. By full-time on Sunday, one of these teams’ dreams will be shattered.
Despite being a place behind the visitors, Warrington have won both matches between the two this season and are the current holders of the Challenge Cup. Key to them retaining their title will be the form of Joel Monaghan, who has continuously touched down beyond the try line this season.
The BBC reports that Huddersfield are boosted by the return of Luke Robinson after he was knocked unconscious during their match against Hull. The odds are stacked against Huddersfield, and they will need every ounce of effort from every individual to pull off a reversal here.
Monday July 15—Wigan Warriors vs. Widnes Vikings; DW Stadium, Wigan, England
Bet against a Wigan win at your peril. The Super League leaders score tries for fun, are chasing the double and have home advantage in this quarter-final showdown.
Josh Charnley and Sam Tomkins top the Super League try scoring charts and will be eagerly anticipating the clash against a Widnes Vikings side who don’t boast the strongest defensive record.
But this is a cup competition, and anything can happen. Although Widnes Vikings languish dangerously near the foot of the Super League table, don’t count them out just yet.
Their league position could be vastly improved had they edged out more of the many tight contests they’ve endured and, in Rhys Hanbury and Patrick Ah Van, they have players capable of scoring tries out of nothing.
The last time these two met it was close. Very close. Wigan emerged victorious, but only 33-32, and they were behind for much of the match.
Yes, Wigan are the overwhelming favourites, but Widnes can play without pressure, and you just never know what might happen when the nerves kick in.
