Manchester United Transfer News: Analyzing Jose Mourinho's View on Wayne Rooney

Patrick ClarkeJun 8, 2018

Wayne Rooney's future at Old Trafford is believed to be up in the air, as the star striker has grown disappointed with his role at Manchester United, taking a backseat to leading goalscorer Robin van Persie last season.

And although Rooney has been linked to several notable clubs this summer, there may not be a bigger one than Chelsea, which has welcomed back manager Jose Mourinho this offseason. In a recent interview this July, Mourinho would not rule out a move to land Rooney, per The Mirror's David McDonnell and Rob Burnett:

"

It's a tricky question because I cannot speak about players from other teams. But you know me, and it's not my kind of character to speak with a bit of hypocrisy, and I always say what I think.

He is a player I like very much, but I can say no more than that. Being fast and direct, I like that, but he's a Manchester United player.

There's no doubt that Rooney would be a game-changer for Chelsea or any other Premier League club looking to dethrone United next season.

A smart manager like Mourinho, who has coached world-class forwards in the past—including Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid—understands how much easier life is with a five-star striker in the lineup.

Fernando Torres isn't among that top tier of striking talent. After all, the Spaniard managed just eight goals in 36 appearances in league play last season. Meanwhile, Rooney scored 12 in just 26 appearances, despite battling injury and being overshadowed by the presence of Van Persie.

It's obvious that Mourinho is fond of the 27-year-old's game. Although his comments don't offer too much insight, the response is enough to suggest that Chelsea would love to get its hands on a club cornerstone like Rooney.

Plus, having finally tasted the UEFA Champions League title in 2012, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is no doubt determined to rebuild a winner and return to the top of European club football.

Domestically, the Blues haven't won the Premier League since 2010. After watching United win the league crown in two of the past three seasons, they know that acquiring Rooney allows them to add another dimension at the expense of their rivals.

An experienced manager, Mourinho knows the importance of superstars, especially at the forward position. Under Mourinho, Ronaldo was and cleary still is a player that intimidates with his skill and forces the opposition to game-plan tirelessly.

Much like the Portuguese sensation, the presence of Rooney's name and number on the lineup could be a game-changer. It's certainly been just that for Manchester United over the years.
