Chelsea Transfer News: Mark Schwarzer Was Wise Addition for Blues
With Petr Cech already in goal for Chelsea, the Blues didn't have to devote a lot of resources toward adding a keeper.
The Blues found the perfect answer with former Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer. The Australian international was released by Fulham. That made him readily available and cheap—the perfect option for the Blues.
Chelsea tweeted the news:
Schwarzer became expendable with Holland goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg joining Fulham.
Meanwhile, with Chelsea releasing Ross Turnbull, the Blues were in need of some keeper help.
Schwarzer was not the Blues' first choice. As David Hytner of The Guardian reports, the Blues wanted Norwich City's John Ruddy, but they moved away from him due to his price tag.
This was a quality decision. While it is important to identify a quality backup keeper, the Blues did not need to let themselves become victims of high price tags.
Instead, they found a cheaper option with Schwarzer.
Even at the ripe old age of 40, Schwarzer is still a competent player. He offers a steady presence, good hands and a wealth of experience.
During his 17 professional seasons, Schwarzer has played for Bradford City, Middlesbrough and Fulham.
Schwarzer made the move to England in 1996. Prior to that, he made 367 league appearances during his 11 years in Middlesbrough. At Fulham, he has made over 500 Premier League appearances.
He also has 108 caps for Australia and he recently helped them qualify for the World Cup.
With Cech in front of him, Schwarzer will have a hard time landing much playing time. In his nine seasons in London, Cech has been a fixture in goal for the Blues.
He appears ready to maintain his starting spot for at least the next year. This gives the Blues a quality first option. It also means that Schwarzer signed on to Chelsea knowing his playing time would be limited.
This means it is safe to expect Schwarzer to embrace his role and be ready to play whenever his number is called.
Now, along with starter Cech, Chelsea has a quality and experienced second option. This leaves the Blues in capable hands.
