UFC 162 Fight Card: Power Ranking the Main Card Fights
UFC 162 is just hours away, and the UFC Middleweight Championship is up for grabs once again.
The main card will get underway on pay-per-vew at 10 p.m. ET.
It will feature five fights, and there will be many interesting things to watch throughout the course of the card. The aforementioned title fight, two more middleweight scraps and two key featherweight bouts as well.
This is how each fight on the main card stacks up against one another.
No. 5: Mark Munoz vs. Tim Boetsch
1 of 5This fight could turn out to be a surprise, but it enters as the fifth on this list due to the stylistic matchup.
Two hard-throwing wrestlers will probably end up against the fence a lot in this fight. It will be grueling and perhaps an interesting chess match. However, for most, it won't be as entertaining as the other fights.
Munoz vs. Boetsch will be a significant fight in the division. Neither fighter will want to take too many risks in this match as they look to work their way up the UFC's middleweight ladder. That will play heavily in to the entertainment of the bout.
There is the possibility that these two simply throw down, but I don't expect that to be the case.
No. 4: Tim Kennedy vs. Roger Gracie
2 of 5For many, Tim Kennedy vs. Roger Gracie may be the least anticipated of the card.
Both fighters are making their organizational debut, and both fighters are not in contention to make too much noise in the division. Why does it rank above Munoz vs. Boetsch?
Excitement.
Where Munoz and Boetsch may end up against the fence a lot, Kennedy vs. Gracie has an element of the unknown. That adds to the interest.
If the fight hits the ground at some point in the 15 minutes, everyone will want to play close attention to Gracie's offense and Kennedy's defense. The ground battle is what moves this slightly above the more relevant middleweight fight.
No. 3: Cub Swanson vs. Dennis Siver
3 of 5Featherweights bring the goods, and the first fight of the PPV will deliver in a big way.
Cub Swanson and Dennis Siver meet in a big divisional clash. The No. 5 and No. 6 ranked 145-pounders will try to make a case for title contention at UFC 162.
What makes this fight exciting is that both men love to strike. If this fight remains on the feet it has all the potential to earn both fighters a little extra bonus money for Fight of the Night.
Swanson is the more well rounded of the two, but Siver enters with fun striking techniques and a surprising grappling game. These two featherweights will open the card in the right fashion.
No. 2: Frankie Edgar vs. Charles Oliveira
4 of 5The former UFC Lightweight Champion, Frankie Edgar, will have his first non-five round fight in a long time at UFC 162 against Charles Oliveira.
Edgar, currently ranked No. 3 in the featherweight division, will have his hands full with Oliveira.
Oliveira's abilities are what elevates this fight to the No. 2 position on this list. How he competes with Edgar will make the fight.
Edgar is the favorite for good reason, but Oliveira is no slouch. If Oliveira is competitive with Edgar, it may be the best fight of the night. He has the tools to go at it with Edgar. I believe he will fight up to his potential and make this one of the best fights of the night.
No. 1: UFC Middleweight Championship: Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman
5 of 5This is no surprise. The main event is No. 1 on this list.
It is not because it's the main event. It is not because it is a title fight. It is not because of Anderson Silva or Chris Weidman.
It is the totality of all those factors and more.
Weidman is the biggest threat to Silva's reign in quite some time. On paper he gives Silva a lot of problems, but that is just on paper. It is hard to translate that into success inside the octagon against the greatest of all-time.
This is why the fans bought the tickets. This is why we will order the PPV. This is it.
