UFC 162 Results: Top 10 Featherweights in the UFC

Riley KontekJun 4, 2018

In the aftermath of UFC 162, there has been a shake-up in the featherweight division. In fact, between the two main card bouts that featured featherweights, there was a big shake-up in the middle of the rankings.

In the first 145-pound bout, Cub Swanson knocked out Dennis Siver to move closer to the championship. In the co-main event and other 145-pound tilt, Frankie Edgar outpointed a surprisingly up-to-it Charles Oliveira.

Following the landmark UFC event, here are the top 10 featherweights in the UFC.

Note: Anthony Pettis was not included, as he has yet to fight at 145.

10. Dustin Poirier

1 of 10

Last fight: Decision loss to Cub Swanson

Next fight: vs. Erik Koch at UFC 164

Dustin Poirier may be the future of the division with guys like Charles Oliveira, Hacran Dias and Conor McGregor. He has the all-around skills to make moves up the featherweight ladder.

Poirier is noted for his savvy grappling ability but is also well-versed in his boxing game. However, he has failed to get that keynote win against a top-10 guy, failing in bouts against Cub Swanson and Chan Sung Jung.

Now working at American Top Team, expect big things in the future for the Louisiana native.

9. Dennis Siver

2 of 10

Last fight: Knockout loss to Cub Swanson

Next fight: N/A

Dennis Siver's undefeated streak at featherweight was halted at UFC 162, as he took a brutal knockout loss at the hands of Cub Swanson.

Siver showed in bouts against Diego Nunes and Nam Phan that a move to featherweight was a great one. And although he took a loss to Swanson, he looked great in the first round of that fight.

A loss to Swanson is nothing that will hurt his stock too much. However, Siver needs to get back on track in his next outing, or he will find himself on the outside looking in.

8. Nik Lentz

3 of 10

Last fight: Decision win vs. Hacran Dias

Next fight: N/A

A drop to 145 was the medicine Nik Lentz needed a while back, as he is now 3-0 in the division and a contender. He has beaten guys like Diego Nunes and Hacran Dias, which shows he made the right call in switching weight classes.

He has no fight on the horizon yet, but one would have to assume he gets a top-10 guy. After his dominating performance against Dias, it showed he is worthy of that in his next bout.

7. Clay Guida

4 of 10

Last fight: Decision win vs. Hatsu Hioki

Next fight: vs. Chad Mendes at UFC 164

Clay Guida has just one featherweight bout under his belt, but it was a victory over noted Japanese grappler Hatsu Hioki. Controversial or not, Guida solidified his place in the top 10 with that win.

Guida's combination of wrestling and killer cardio make him a problem for any man he faces. His frantic style is hard to duplicate in training camp, which automatically gives him an advantage in the cage.

He next faces top featherweight Chad Mendes in Milwaukee. A win for Guida would push him into the top five.

6. Cub Swanson

5 of 10

Last fight: Knockout win vs. Dennis Siver

Next fight: N/A

At UFC 162, Cub Swanson moved himself into a realm that could produce a title shot in the near future. His knockout of Dennis Siver and overall performance back him up should he wish to get a title shot at Jose Aldo soon.

Swanson has really stormed into the spotlight since his move over to the UFC from the WEC. His loss to Ricardo Lamas in his UFC debut must have lit a fire under him, as he has rattled off wins against George Roop, Ross Pearson, Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier and Siver.

He is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu with powerful striking. He is the perfect monster to terrorize the 145-pound division.

5. Ricardo Lamas

6 of 10

Last fight: Knockout win vs. Erik Koch

Next fight: N/A

Ricardo Lamas was supposed to make his return at UFC 162, but the title bout shake-up for UFC 163 left him without an opponent.

Many think Lamas is the real No.1 contender in the featherweight division, considering he is 4-0 in the division against the likes of Cub Swanson, Hatsu Hioki and Erik Koch.

His combination of wrestling and power makes him a guy to keep your eye on. He may be one fight away from fighting for gold.

4. Chan Sung Jung

7 of 10

Last fight: Submission win vs. Dustin Poirier

Next fight: vs. Jose Aldo at UFC 163

This may be a controversial decision to have Chan Sung Jung this high, but the fact of the matter is that his last three wins have been unbelievable. Between a twister, a seven-second knockout and a Fight of the Year submission win, Jung has looked like one of the most improved fighters in the featherweight division.

Jung is a solid striker with an unorthodox, yet effective, grappling style. The biggest setback for him is that he has not fought in over a year, which could hurt him against a guy as high level as Jose Aldo.

We will find out at UFC 163 if he is on the same level as Aldo.

3. Chad Mendes

8 of 10

Last fight: Knockout win vs. Darren Elkins

Next fight: vs. Clay Guida at UFC 164

Chad Mendes's march back toward the title picture was weak at best when he fought middle-to-bottom carders like Cody McKenzie and Yaotzin Meza, but knocking out Darren Elkins in his latest bout proved that Mendes is still the cream of the crop.

Mendes and most of his Alpha Male teammates are top-notch fighters in the lower weight class. Mendes has the wrestling and power punching to compete with any man in the division.

If he wants another date with Jose Aldo, he'll need to get by energetic enigma Clay Guida in Milwaukee next month.

2. Frankie Edgar

9 of 10

Last fight: Decision win vs. Charles Oliveira

Next fight: N/A

Frankie Edgar broke his dry spell at UFC 162 in defeating Charles Oliveira. The former lightweight champion didn't find the bout easy, but in the end he did enough to take the judges' scorecards.

The win for Edgar, in unison with his closely contested bout with champion Jose Aldo, has him immediately back in the title picture. Of course, there is a logjam in that title picture, which means he could have to take a fight or two more to get that shot.

1. Jose Aldo

10 of 10

Last fight: Decision win vs. Frankie Edgar

Next fight: vs. Chan Sung Jung at UFC 163

It is obvious why Jose Aldo is the No.1 featherweight in the UFC. He is undefeated under the Zuffa umbrella, he is the champion, and he has dominated the competition for years.

His next outing is against Chan Sung Jung in Brazil. A win over him leaves the champion options in the form of Cub Swanson, Ricardo Lamas, Chad Mendes and Frankie Edgar.

The lightweight division is likely the future for Aldo, as the weight cut is becoming tough for him. That being said, he still has some work at 145 before he makes a move to 155.
