Secret Life Of a Pro-Wrestler, Personal Experience Part 15:Going Extreme

Joe Burgett May 6, 2009

Welcome to another Secret Life of a Pro-Wrestler edition. If you are not familiar with the article, it is basically a documentary of my character's role in a wrestling organization.

I ask you to check them all out if you haven't yet done so. Here is Part 14 if you have not seen it. I ask you to check it out to better understand this article, that is if you have not already seen it.

Now to Part 15

I was making a huge rise since my match with Shawn Michaels. I had nine matches since my battle with Michaels and won all but the last. That made me 8-1 since I had my push.

I lost to Drew McIntyre because he was making his way up to the ECW Roster, and it was his last match in FCW. So I was a product of the system at that point.

But I did deserve my shot at the FCW World Championship. I had been on a roll, and if I was going to make an impact, then I had to start getting matches for the Championship.

I could finally win that FCW Championship, which I felt I deserved.

The fans were behind me, all I had to do was get that small push from management to that title.

Just because I was facing the top talent and beating them seemed to mean nothing. I was just as good as the FCW Champion at the time, Wes Brisco.

Brisco isn't anywhere near as athletic or popular with the fans as I am. Yet he gets the FCW Title?

I don't know about that.

Sure he had great wrestling ability, no doubt about that. He deserved to be in main events. But so did I.

I had to talk to someone about this. So I marched up to the creative team and asked them why I was wrestling against the top talent, but wasn't even being considered for the FCW Championship.

They told me that they couldn't discuss anything with me, that I had to wait for a big announcement on FCW Thursday.

I couldn't wait that long, I mean I deserved my shot. I had been in FCW a year now, and I was facing—and beating—the top talent. That included former FCW Champions, and I wasn't getting any wrestling gold out of it?

It wasn't right!

But maybe I could hold off. I went to the weight room to try and blow off some steam. It seemed to be a peaceful place for me.

It was a weird thing for me, as it was a place I hardly ever went before all of this. And now it had become a bit of a sanctuary for me.

I was helping myself in more ways than one by doing this. I spent a few hours there, pumping iron and trying to think of what the announcement could possibly be about.

Was it about the FCW Championship? Maybe I was a part of it.

Maybe it was something else, but in any case, Thursday was just two days away. I would be all ears, as I didn't have a match for that night.

Thursday, night of FCW

It was finally here, I had been waiting for so long. Well, it was just a few days, but it seemed like forever.

You know how you wait through December for Christmas Day to come? And then you make it all the way to Dec. 24, but it seems like even longer than a month just to wait a few more hours to open presents?

That's how I felt.

Finally our "GM" came out. Incidentally, it was his first appearance on FCW. Usually the matches just happened, and we never got to see the GM.

Nevertheless, John Laurinitus came out to address the FCW audience.

He said:

"One superstar here on FCW had been doing well for a while now. More than anybody else here, he was deserving of a lot in FCW. The fact is, he cannot get the attention he needs down here. He needs out.

“He has to make his way out of FCW. He is better than FCW. He is so good that Vince McMahon himself asked for him to be called up to the ECW Roster."

He paused for a moment, looking around at all the fans who were hanging on his every word.

We all knew he was talking about our FCW Champion, Wes Brisco. I mean, he does have connections, so obviously he was the guy, right?

Not so fast!

JL went on:

"This man made his way to FCW in a very weird way. He was not even a wrestler, but just managed to get thrown into the world of wrestling. It was an uncanny thing to see.

"He wasn't that great when we first saw him, but he worked hard, he listened, he improved, and became one of the best we have ever seen come through here."

Another dramatic pause.

I was wondering where he was going with this. He couldn’t be talking about Brisco. Was he actually talking about me?

JL continued:

"He has been very patient here, and has waited his turn. The young man has been a tag champion here before. While short lived, it was much deserved. Of course I am talking about ..."

Then, all of a sudden, my music hit!

JL then shouted out: “None other than 'Mr. Less than a God, but More than a Man'—Joe Burgett!"

I came out, because my music had been cued, trying not to let anybody know how surprised I was.

I mean, I was stunned to hear that I was moving up to the ECW Roster. Sure, I wanted to finally move up. But there were days when I thought it would never happen.

They had me go over on the top guys in FCW, but not win the title, to keep me out of any drawn-out storylines.

That way, I could move up the moment Vinny Mac made the call.

Laurinitis said in the ring:

"Joe, I know we didn't tell you this before the show. But I wanted you to hear this in front of all the fans. I know that you have worked hard to get to this stage in your career. And since you were once in the seats with these fans before, I thought it would be best if you found out with them. With your people, Joe. Take the mic, Joe, and address your people."

In a stunned state, I said:

"Ah, thank you. This is indeed a surprise. I have no idea what to say. I guess I need to thank you guys. Management, those guys back in the locker room, but mostly the fans. I would not be here without you, and I feel that this proves one thing: Anything is possible"

I left the ring, for the last time in FCW.

John caught me in the back once the show was over.

He told me that he kept the writers and creative team on the hush hush. They couldn't tell anything to anyone. This explained why they had told me nothing the other day.

He said he was proud of how far I had come, and he knew I would be a big star in the WWE soon. I just had to keep doing what I do best, and I would be fine.

I would be getting my first match on ECW next week at the ECW/SmackDown tapings. And the WWE decided that ECW would be LIVE that week. They were then going to tape SmackDown after the Live ECW Tuesday.

Who would I be facing though? And would I make a good impression in my first TV match?
