Luis Suarez's Departure from Liverpool Would Benefit Both Reds and Star Striker
There comes a point in many player-organization relationships when there just isn't anything left to do. That's where embattled striker Luis Suarez stands with Liverpool after an incredibly odd tenure at Anfield.
Suarez confirmed to The Guardian that he's ready to move on from England and start out fresh with a new club, insisting that massive media attention has bothered his privacy and his family.
""My coach and my colleagues know that they [the media] didn't treat me well. Because of the paparazzi I could not go in my garden, I could not go to the supermarket. My reason for leaving is not the money. It's my family and image. I don't feel comfortable here any more."
"
Despite another obvious instance of Suarez's interest in continuing his career elsewhere, Liverpool has remained straightforward on how they expect to deal with the situation, according to their official Twitter account.
"Luis Suarez is not for sale. LFC is fully supportive of Luis and expect him to honour his contract.
— Liverpool FC(@LFC) May 31, 2013"
The Reds have been keen on keeping their prized, young striker through his duration at Anfield, despite numerous behavior issues on the pitch that have gained attention across the football world.
They've put a ton of hope into the Uruguayan, but the point has come where enough is enough. Suarez has been banned a total of 19 games in his Liverpool career. The crazy thing is, none of them have been from a red card.
The trouble started soon after Suarez's arrival, when he was suspended eight games for racial abuse of Manchester United defender Patrice Evra (h/t The Guardian). But it didn't end there, as he received a one-game suspension for an obscene gesture to Fulham fans.
However, he hadn't drawn the complete ire of some English football fans until late in the 2012-13 Premier League campaign, when Suarez bit the arm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a league match as you can see below.
Suarez, at times, has simply made his club look unsportsmanlike, violent and even racist. After more than one of these major gaffes, the plug has to be pulled to protect the integrity of your club and players.
On top of that, Liverpool can't afford to carry dead weight on their roster if they're focused on rebuilding themselves into a contender for EPL titles. A disgruntled Suarez who wants out of town couldn't do much for the money they could spend elsewhere.
I understand that Liverpool is desperately looking to rebound and Suarez has long been pegged as the leader of that revival, but there is no shortage of talented youngsters to build a club around. They'll be able to find another Suarez without the risk and negative attention.
Whether Suarez has cleaned up his act or not, the bad press, mockery from other players and criticism from fans will follow him as long as he's in England. That's why a change of scenery would best suit the 26-year-old.
Suarez certainly expected more from his tenure with Liverpool, but he should feel comfortable knowing he's still a highly-touted player in his prime who many of the best teams are interested in. If it's admiration and respect he's looking for, it won't be hard to find in another environment.
It's was reported by The Guardian that Suarez is drawing interest from Real Madrid in the wake of his Liverpool fiasco, which could be a preferable location for Suarez. Instead of holding up the pressure of being the star and savior of an organization, he can focus on fitting into the team and working alongside other star players.
But whether Suarez ends up in Madrid or not, a change from his current life at Anfield sounds like the best for him and Liverpool.
