Floyd Mayweather Announces That He Will Fight Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 14

Floyd Mayweather announced on Wednesday night that his next fight will be against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in September.

Mayweather commented on the upcoming bout, reportedly saying, "I'm going to whip that ass," according to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole. 

It's difficult to imagine the 44-0 Mayweather losing to anyone, especially after the transcendent performance he put forth against Robert Guerrero earlier this month in a unanimous-decision win. But there are very few opponents who are more compelling than Canelo. 

Alvarez is confident heading into the mega-fight, according to Iole:

"He's a great fighter, but I have intelligence in that ring and I have the same speed he has," Alvarez said through interpreter Eric Gomez. "I can use my head, but I have that special thing: I have some power that will help me."

The 22-year-old Alvarez is 42-0-1 and coming off a unanimous-decision win of his own in which he knocked down the previously undefeated Austin Trout in the seventh round. The right-hander possesses the machine-like offensive skill set and punching ability to at least challenge Mayweather's world-class defense. 

Undefeated vs. undefeated. Up-and-coming phenom vs. established future Hall of Famer (and one of the best ever). Offense vs. defense. Two of the most popular fighters in the sport today. 

This may not be on the megafight level of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, but there is little question why this WBA/WBC super welterweight unification bout serves as such a potentially massive draw.

Many wondered whom Mayweather would select to fight after defeating Guerrero, and this is the decision that seemingly everyone was hoping for—a matchup sure to result in some fireworks.

His fight against Guerrero produced some less-than-spectacular—at least for Money's standards—pay-per-view numbers, but this bout has the potential to churn out some colossal figures.
