Bayern Munich: Jurgen Klopp Wants 'Messy' Robert Lewandowski Transfer Saga Ended

Ian RodgersJun 8, 2018

The seemingly endless transfer speculation surrounding Robert Lewandowski and Bayern Munich will be sorted out "in the coming days," according to Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp in an interview with German newspaper Bild (via Sky Sports).

The striker has been linked strongly with a move to the Allianz Arena recently and the rumours took on more intensity in the wake of the Champions League final defeat to Bayern at Wembley on Saturday.

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes claimed Lewandowski would soon be following Mario Gotze from Dortmund to Bavaria, as ESPN reported, leaving incoming head coach Pep Guardiola with a mouth-watering squad to select from when he replaces the former West Germany international after the German Cup final this weekend.

Lewandowski's agent Maik Barthel told Sport Bild (via The Guardian) in April that the forward would be joining a new club in the summer.

"

We have reached an agreement with a club and intend [him] to move this summer.

There is a very interesting offer for Robert which fulfils entirely the demands set by Dortmund and also the demands of Robert.

Dortmund have assured us that Robert can move at the end of the season under these conditions. We stick to agreements and now it's up to the clubs to sort things out.

"

Bayern, though, immediately released a statement to deny any contract was in place for Lewandowski, as The Guardian reported.

The news of Gotze's departure to Dortmund's rivals angered Westfalenstadion supporters but the impending exit of leading goalscorer Lewandowski is a further major blow to the fans.

However, Klopp insists no bid has been received from Bayern for the forward, who scored 33 goals in the Bundesliga and Champions League this season.

"

As things stand, there is no official offer from Bayern Munich. I expect Robert to be playing for us next season. We are going to ensure a line is drawn under the speculation in the coming days.

We will see what happens. Anything is possible, but I can work with every scenario.

The only strange thing is that everybody is acting as if the issue has already been resolved. Jupp Heynckes says this, his agent says that - and we don't even have an offer for him. What's all that about?

The way things are going is not very pretty.

"

The potential departure of Lewandowski will do little to quell the anger of Dortmund supporters, who are still smarting from the announcement of Gotze's £31.5 million switch to Bayern the day after the Champions League quarterfinal win over Malaga.

Describing the situation as "not very pretty" is an understatement on Klopp's part. If there is a silver lining to the Gotze sale, it is that it was done without fuss even if it was a shock.

But the sale of Lewandowski has become the subject of claim and counter-claim which does little to appease Dortmund supporters, while Klopp's preseason plans remain on hold until the deal is done.

The Dortmund boss will be ready for the eventual move, but the messy nature of the striker's exit is doing Lewandowski no favours at all.
